its not a thirdie plane sorry for the term, it requires a big budget to maintain. but i really question thoose maintendance hours, it doesnt add up with the daily activity we manage to do with our small fleet of them. the missions they fly every day from just one of our f35 airfields shouldnt be possible with the worst case maintendance scenario for them. its also capable of operating from swedish and finnish road runways and cant be refueled and rearmed in such settings. its just made for a different use, f35 can enter contested airspace and either operate stealthy or establish some level of air dominance, gripen is made to make shure foreign forces never do that on your airspace. they are basicly arch enemies.

That's not the reason, Romania got tons of them and their aviation infrastructure is far less developed than ours (we've had an air force/air corps since WW1 and even achieved air supremacy during the Franco-Thai War).

The real reason is America knows we hold exercises with China and doesn't want F-35s potentially involved. Even though Singapore already sold out their F-35s to Beijing years ago.

i know it was mostly politics involved but countries with smaller per capita military spending should look for bangs per buck not fancy expencive tech from usa.
its also the possibility that if usa realise their "enemy" whoever that might be have f35 they simply scrap the whole program and destroy the tooling to repair it. they did that to f14 due to iran having them and then going against usa. f14 being a plane usa really wish they had in their fleet today.
>inb4 f35 can be remotely shut down
no it cant if that was possible every chinese and russian hacker would be paid by the goverment to crack that code and they would have succeded by now. usa isnt that dumb.

Again, our military budget - including air force budget - is larger than that of Romania and we were only looking to buy 8 F-35s. Meanwhile America is selling 30-40+ to Romania. America even tried to sell us Block 70 F-16s that actually would've been MORE expensive than F-35s. So don't say it's about budget, it's purely politics.

Anyway, America doesn't need an active kill switch, it can just refuse software updates.

romania is a poorfag country desperately trying to be rich while also dead scared of russia for obvious reasons. a romanian here will work a dead end minimum wage job and buy a bmw just to not look poor. its the same thing, they already bought most of or f16's just to have something in the air while they wait. back to the car analogy, if you are poor, better to buy skoda or fiat, cars you can afford and maintain than something you cant afford. you can make up some of the disadvantage in numbers and training.
with 8 f35s 2-4 of these would be in usa for training and you only got 4 active in your country, some of them will be down for maintendance you might not afford. just buy 20 more gripens instead.

planes like f35 is designed to beat planes like gripen, gripen is designed to counter planes like f35 on a budget. if any is successfull at that we dont yet know. what is your doctrine? stay at home and protect your airspace? then its gripen.
possibly be part of a unit like nato, go abroad, defend others or cover wast oceans, maybe a few attack runs into enemy territory? then its f35.
