I had trouble with the same thing (believing in God), however I eventually came to the conclusion that being religious (even if not Christian) is practically always better than being an atheist. To be atheist means you must live a somewhat hopeless and empty life, as you believe that nothing happens after you die, so I asked myself the question: why would I choose to believe in nothing, when I could instead believe in something? Additionally, many (but not all) atheists believe that their moral compass developed over the course of two to three decades is somehow superior guidance than the combined knowledge and wisdom of hundreds of generations, which is effectively what a large part of these holy books are. The more you learn the more you will realize that even if God isn't real, he (and religion) needs to exist in order to convince most individuals to live a life that isn't strictly hedonistic.
