WTF is chinese slang
I think I just saw "米油" used as an insult? Pretty sure it just means rice oil. Context was 谁乐意看米油的垃圾角设啊,换来换去角色都是通模加米油通用服设,搁这做克隆人呢

Keep seeing weird words getting used as slang in chinese, can tell they're slang, but there's no way to look up slang words? How does chinese slang work?

米油(miyo)=米哈遊(mihoyo), which is somehow controversial on chinese internet
Go to ngabbs and browse posts about 米哈遊

It's a huge country. I've had friends from 100km away speak a language that we both know and understand very little of it, or at least very little of the slang

Explain it.

Explain what? If you mean the former it's just some homophone. If it's the latter, Chinese gacha game (二次元遊戲 or 二遊 for short) companies are known to actively mobilize their playerbase to boost charts (打榜), suppress dislikers (控評) and demean rival companies etc. Such technique is called 飯圈化營銷 (fandom marketing), a term that originated from the fanbase of Chinese pop stars.

In 2020 the Chinese government noticed the use of this technique (see http://sd.people.com.cn/BIG5/n2/2020/0821/c373025-34242959.html) in the pop industy and decided to crackdown on it. Many suspect that employees who were fired due to the crackdown were then rehired by vidya companies and this eventually lead to the mass adoption of 飯圈營銷 in the game industry
