Another common mistranslation is the "pillar of salt" one which is hardly the translators fault, there was a shared word for limestone and salt (both deposit minerals), statues made of limestone, a bust statue, a common metaphor the original culture for "an example". Then "looked back" is allegorical speech for significantly lagged behind having second thoughts about leaving. So it is saying that Lot's wife lagged behind on the road, not trusting his premonition, and died as a result in the calamity, becoming an example of why you don't do that.
