We still have active conscription. In 2018 in Vienna, for me, it was about 15% muslims and 40% some sort of balkanoid.

The civilian workers were mainly Austrian, while the officers, at least at the barracks i was, were like 30% Turks and the rest Austrian. But basically every foreigner I've met, that actually stayed at the military, was extremely integrated and basically acted the same as any of the Austrians, even in more casual, private conversations.

i should note, the younger "Unteroffiziere" specifically, aka the NCOs, with which you have the most interactions with as a conscript. The Offiziere were probably 95% Austrian.

Yeah i heard the same stories too, a lot of the old guys are drunkards and it used to be what the Army is known for really.

Its not a big thing with the new generations, we only got properly pissed once as a group. Weed was a lot more popular, and like half the Platoon used Snus too.

You get paid peanuts, the food outside of lunch was generally crap, the accommodations are old and not in the best conditions. If you're unlucky, your superiors are total dicks and they can legally fuck you harder than you thought. Some jobs and opportunities after the basic bootcamp are cool, but most people don't get lucky like that, and might end up just being a guard.

I worked 3 "shifts" a week, i had to be at my barracks at 6:30, clean the toilets, showers and similar, at ~12:20 i would start my actual shift until ~13:00 next day with 4 hours of rest, then again clean the barracks and at 14:00 i could finally go, get the next day off, and the day after that i was back at the barracks at 6:30 to do the same thing again.

Very boring and tiring, even though we basically did nothing but stand outside a few hours a day and check a bunch of people coming in and out the barracks.

I guess every Army with forced conscription is hated, that said some of the experiences and camaraderie are truly unique, i probably wouldn't do it again anyway.
