The Chinese tried to co-opt anime to gain soft power, hence all the anime games and shows and everything. But it backfired, and all it did was further increase Japanese soft power instead, because the Chinese failed to actually make an anime style that could have a uniquely Chinese touch, and still relied on Japanese VAs. So they ended up further bolstering Japan's soft power even more.
