India wasn't a country before Britain arrived, it was never ever in history unified or at least wasn't unified in any meaningful capacity or length of time, it was a collection of dozens and dozens of autonomous kingdoms.
In a way Britain unified them. That's not to argue that British colonization was benevolent, absolutely not, and Britain should pay reparations to indian to compensate them for colonizing them.

my point is that the most productive, ambitious, and intelligent people in india used to work on projects like that. now those same people are building companies. in the early 1900s they were becoming lawyers and starting social movements. the actions of the most ambitious in society have shifted over time, and it indicates quite a bit about the direction a society is headed in
