The friend who told me this said when he was a kid he saw his teacher working at home Depot and thought he was working there because he loves home Depot so much.

My wife is a teacher. She gets the option of getting paid for the nine months school is in session or splitting it across all twelve. I think this is pretty standard in the US.
The salary isn't great but it's much better than any wagie job and her benefits are superior to mine at my private sector job where I get paid nearly 2x as much. And you can always go do wagie work for some extra money over the summer if you really want to but it's actually cheaper for her to stay home and watch the kids. So not really worth complaining about, although we live in a middling cost of living area with a decent school system. Things might be different if you're in an HCOL, a minority-majority area, or some shithole in the south.
