This cycle has been happening since the Bronze Age collapse and likely even before that. Empires grow too large, become too reliant on luxury and surplus to maintain the standard of living they’ve created, expand too far beyond their capabilities in an attempt to maintain that standard, and eventually implode as a result of spreading themselves too thin.
