We used to have dovecotes here. They were very important during the Great Depression and WWI as pigeons are good source of protein, make guano (excellent fertilizer), and cost nothing to raise since they are able to free forage for themselves. However soon after WWI chicken lobby shilled chickens to point where it became seen as too rustic to have pigeons for eating.

Mostly they prefer to eat grains. 100 pigeons even will not noticeably damage average sized corn field. They eat from the ground.
