If the North Africans were not happy with the French rule and wanted them to rule North Africa, why did they moved to France in masses after their independence?

Pic related is the Algerian Independence referandum. 99.72% of people there voted yes for independence.

immigration started even before independence and much of it was involuntary
it's a complicated topic but suffice it to say, in the period between 1962 and the late 80s, pretty much any algerian who wanted to, regardless of qualifications or status could pack up and go to france, find blue collar work, acquire french citizenship, it was that easy, both my grandparents on both sides went to work in france to send money back home and eventually returned, despite it being that easy and ungated relatively few people moved permanently, in the order of a few hundred thousand out of 20 millions at the time

It's still more people than 0.28% that voted to remain under the French rule. My point is why would you make things more inconvenient for yourself by needing to travel abroad, when you were able to enjoy that rule home? It's an oxymoronic behavior.

Do not respond to """first world""" flags asking specific questions about MENA countries. In reality it's a jew trying to spur inflammatory discussions that get paid by the (you). Real nordics live in their big ass house in the countryside and could not give less of a shit. And they don't know what an ''Algeria" is either. Shill thread move on.

no it's not oxymoronic at all because you assume that colonial algeria was comparable to metropolitan france or was somehow benevolent or developed for the natives and they had no legitimate reasons to want to get rid of the french
algerians lived under this brutal indigénat system and were completely removed from whatever benefits french society conferred, if you go and work in france as a construction worker you're still treated with dignity like an immigrant, if you're algerian in french algeria you're treated worse than scum, totally different systems
you don't even have to take my word for it, I'll refer you to three data points about how shitty french rule was for us, look up the average life expectancy, literacy rate and gdp per capita for algerians during french colonialization, they were all disastrous and on par with subsaharan africa
people too easily assume just because france is developed that means living under french colonailism gave you those benefits, it very demonstrably didn't

It's a quite straightforward question. When did this lust for independence turned into a desire to get on a boat to work and live as a lower class minority in France? Those are completely opposite things yet occured in pretty much the same time period.

>gdp per capita
or more accurately gni per capita as it's harder to account for gdp for specific populations

I am not arguing here that the French rule was beneficial for the locals, I am just pointing on the irony of not being happy with being a lower class people compared to the French, yet still moving to France right after your independence.

I agree with you, I can explain it (language proficiency, guest worker programs, existing diaspora pull, similarity and interconnection of systems like education and business, etc) but it's still kind of embarrassing given the context
I wouldn't be caught dead in France personally
