Agriculture is automated and requires very little labor (besides produce/fruits which is harvested by seasonal migrants). Resource extraction is also automated. Manufacturing is moving to southern metro areas. There's very little economic reason for 20% of our population to still be in rural areas, and most young people want to leave and they seethe that the government should save their town.

A lot of people from around the country are moving to southern metro areas, many of them are actually doing quite well.
