I like French culture and history. Their architecture especially. But I have a feeling if I ever went there I'd fucking hate it.

French is not a singular culture, never has been. Or if it was, it was just for a couple of centuries. irrelevant today.
Yeah nice manors/castles and whatever, but you're not getting the same experience at all one side of the country or the other. Pretty sure you would like it.
You would try to see everything in a matter of a couple of weeks, like all Americans tend to do when they visit. You should instead pick a region and try to go as deep as possible in the local culture and take a lesson in history from Antiquity to the present time. Visit archeological sites, then medieval sites, then modern sites with century-old restaurants, then party at a club or something. There are things to enjoy everywhere, if you pick your destination right.

Well the problem would then be to find a place to go. I hear Paris is awful and Marseille is where you go to get stabbed. However, I did kind of wanted to see Marseille. And just the countryside in general. France has a sensualness to it that I don't think most French are even aware of. It's very obvious to a burger and fries American like me. But I've just repeatedly heard that all the cities are hellholes now. So I don't know where I'd go.

this country is a brown shithole
you would fall into a depression in less than a week anywhere in France, the country is genuinely pathetic
the fact that the buildings and overall aesthetic is so nice makes it even worse, a thousand years of history and refinement just to get demorgaphically replaced in a few decades
tldr : total boomers death

I genuinely dislike American culture, except Southern culture, which actually exists, unlike what the rest of the country has. There's nothing at all interesting about buying big house, buying new car, going into debt, eating fast food, and watching Afroball forever. But that's what most Americans do straight on until death. Travel abroad at all and you'll very quickly realize how people don't really *do* anything here. It's just work -> distractions -> work -> distractions. There's no festivals or community engagement, and nothing really to look back on or engage with.

Living in a tiny apartment with a garden and sharing a bottle of wine with the neighbors sounds like a vastly better existence. Not saying all French people have that or do that, but it's better than what we have here. I'd also like to go to a museum and see real artwork. Not afroslop on a canvas. American museums suck so bad. I'm so fucking sick of going to a city and see "muh slabery" shit.

If I was rich, I'd fix places like that up and turn them over as historical landmarks.

Which part? The drinking wine with randos, or rebuilding a chateau? I don't have boomer money, so fantasize as I might, the chateau idea is off the table.
