If they kept their monarch they could've been the UAE of North Africa.

My father is Tunisian, I never lived there but I went there for vacation and to see family a few times. I don't think Tunisia will become as wealthy as the UAE or Switzerland in our lifetime but it can get better. The problem is that men in this nation seem all paralized by some sort of depression and seem to have not much will to live or start doing stuff. The hardest working Tunisians seems to all leave for the Gulf, France or Germany. The men that stayed are very complacent and they don't care at all about their country. I have witnessed many time men throwing garbage in the street. They spend hours drinking coffee and talking, they talk so much yet don't do much. It's very weird. The women are not like this at all, Tunisian women work better at school on average and seem to be much more active and less likely to waste time. This is not just a problem of povrety, this is culture. Most Tunisian can afford a home and food. But they somehow don't learn to apply themselves or just take care of their nature and infrastructure. It doesn't help that they practice Islam selectively, dropping the best parts of it and keeping the parts that interest them. They will use Islam when it benefit them. They also live through social media vicariously, they believe that putting effort in Tunisia is not worth it because life is instantly better in Europe. They will save all their money and instead of opening a businness they will spend it all to illegally or legally immigrate. It think it can become a nice nation in a generation or two if they realize building your own home is more satisfying to living in someone's else.

No, the bey of Tunis and his family were weak, Tunisia stagnated under their rule, Bourguiba did the right thing to abolish the monarchy, unironically there was no man better suited than him to lead Tunisia into the future, today we have the strongest currency in Africa and we're the number one exporter of chemicals in Africa selling to Europe and America and assemble car and plane parts and recently launched a 100% Tunisian made satellite into space successfully, Bourguiba created from tunisians the best educated people in Africa.
If Tunisia remained a monarchy we'd be in a worse place today.
Bourguiba was a revolutionary, a forward thinking man, he had what it took to make Tunisia pick herself up from the ground.
