I hadn't heard that honestly, but I also don't use the stuff. The most I ever do is cleanser, moisturizer and some sunscreen. In all honesty, moisturizer is all you really need.

I had the same problem. I looked 15 when I was 25.
I'm 29 now and recently grew a full beard. I hate it and maintenance is a pain in the ass because it's very thick and wiry, but at least it makes me look like an adult.

For me it's the latter. I have a prepubescent chin and a small recessed jaw. I also have a fat face regardless of my weight. I sculpted my beard to make it look like I have a Chad jawline, kind of like Dan Bilzerian's beard.
I'm just glad I have good beard genetics. I don't even know who I got my beard genetics from because my dad can only grow a weak goatee.
