If we have normal countries (no modern nation state is normal) and 3-4 kids per family we can think about expanding our borders.

We were at war with the Russian empire under Austria-Hungary and such but besides old wars nothing else. Not sure what that was about, but I assume even Russian didn't like Yugoslavia existing and preferred smaller weaker states in the Balkans and already had the experience of an unruly Yugoslavia during the Cold War. If you ever visit the Croatian coast in the center of every town you will see monuments to partisans with a list of names of local guys who died in ww2. Italy's goal was to take the Croatian coast and that's why all the people from the coast went to partisans and the war against Italy.
