Was colorism always a thing in India or is it because of colonialism?

Actually, dark skin was seen as beautiful and desirable in ancient India - hence the blue (representing lustrous dark skin) Gods. The perception shifted overtime as the upper classes began spending more time inside, under parasols, etc. while laborers were outside 24/7. Colonialism certainly made colorism much worse, but the mere fact that laborers tanned outside made paler skin desirable in most non-African regions. With tanning becoming popular in the West (the US, Sweden, etc.) that's changing. Also, there is a growing movement within India to embrace natural skintones. Indian youth today, for example, are far less colorist than their parents. Although, colorism likely won't go away completely for a few more decades

You're mentally ill if you think white complexion and feature are less attractive to darker complexion. It's like how people can innately tell when music is being played out of tune. The question, similarly to our musical sense, is why.

I read a book on Blonde hair and found it was universally soyfaced over everywhere, in every society, even when Arabs were enslaving Europeans they were mad crazy for blondes. The Romans were mad crazy for Germanic blondes too, their elites used to shave their Germanic slave girls so their wives could wear the blonde hair as a wig.

There was literally one exception in history, from like 1500-1700 in parts of Europe, that was the one time blondes actually dyed their hair black instead of the reverse.

White skin was in part selected for for sexual selection, the same way blonde hair is. Pale is youthful and people darken as they age.

It seriously exacerbated colorism in Indian society. India has it's own beauty standards of course. So that kind of mitigated it, but colorism is still very ingrained there. It's less bad for men, but for women it can be kind of rough. Actually, people have begun calling it out more vocally now. I hope that it goes away with the coming generations.

I was very pale as a baby, I became darkest around age 10 because I would spent the whole summer outside, I'm paler now but of course much darker than I was as a baby. Many Indians are like that, but that's true of every race probably
