Why are the Japanese people incapable of keeping a good story going past the first season?

Made in Abyss season 2 was such a massive drop in quality from the first season, with an nonsensical plotline and absolutely dogshit character development, it makes me think that the first season was just a fluke

Sweeping generalization, you've never read a story written by a good Japanese writer.
MiA is written by a visual artist, not a writer.
The author basically wakes up one day, decides what kind of image he wants to draw and has the story accomodate his desire.
Practically every western comic and most manga have a writer ordering the artist around, because otherwise you get a plot that makes no sense, characters being forgotten by the author etc.

OnePunch Man (webcomic) has good writing but it's not supposed to be taken seriously.

Because the first season of made in abyss was based on the manga while the second season is completely original. 95% of japanese anime is adapted from manga and often times that manga is unfinished so when the executuves demand a follow up season the often have no source material to draw from and have to make it all up thats why its so much lower quality.

This has been a thing forever, nips tend to drop the ball on endings and second parts due to how their series are made and the pressure of deadlines/editorial input.

Not sure if it’s better or worse than the American model where a series has like 2-3 good seasons then gets cancelled out of nowhere with no conclusion (but also no way to ruin it).

Japanese novelists were pretty famous for their inability to write good endings. In fact, it became fashionable around the time Kawabata won his Nobel prize for Japanese writers to just avoid writing an ending all together.

Obviously there are exceptions but as a people they have always struggled with endings.

To your eternity is one of my most favourite stories, the second season of the anime covers up to the end of the 1st arc, the start of the 2nd arc isn't as good as the 1st but the end of the 2nd arc is really good, and the 3rd arc is absolutely amazing.

Most of the time it's not the fault of the original author, but the animation producers.

The budget is too small
The time is too short
The director from the first season is making a different animation so he can't be in charge of the second season
The excellent animators from the first season are the same as the director.

I don't want to spoil you on the story, but I think by the 2nd season of the anime, it was alluded to that Kahaku is the reincarnation of his great*4-grandmother Hayase, and the relationship between her(and her reincarnations through her descendants) and Fushi is one of the central themes of the entire story. Although Fushi didn't return Kahaku's affections, he did forgive him for what he did in his past life as his great-great-great-great-grandmother, someone who Fushi absolutely hated in contrast.

I assume the 3rd season would not be as boring as the 2nd season, if it will be projected, since the new arc going on in manga is more interesting than the previous arc (anime second season equivalent).
