Russia is especially dogshit in comparison. All we have is very fertile fields, which are unusable for more than half a year. Aside that it's all endless swamps, tundras, deserts and permafrost.

It's a little more complex than it seems because USDA growing zone maps mostly deal with winter and not summer temperatures and latitude mostly affects summer temperatures and not so much winter ones. Thus it's possible for Minnesota to have near-Arctic winters, but the summers feel hotter than they do in northern Europe.

Oh and plant growth completely stops at 9 hours of daylight. Even in a mild location like SoCal with frost free conditions year-round, stuff doesn't grow in the middle of winter due to the shorter daylight hours. Even at 10 hours of daylight plant growth is minimal.

The Eastern US gets sunnier weather as the most common wind direction is out of the west and brings dry Plains air east. In Europe for contrast moist air is pulled in off the ocean. If however the Rocky Mountains didn't exist then there would be a direct west to east flow of Pacific air and result in a mild continent-wide climate.

The Eastern US is fairly similar to China though winters in northern China can be really cold due to the Siberian air flow. Summer weather however is quite close. This has also allowed many invasive East Asian plant species to proliferate in the US as the climate is similar to their native habitat.
