There being an entire spectrum makes matters worse. Even I as a native struggle to tell them apart sometimes, in specific cases. It's not a black and white distinction like it is in Slovakia.

the gypsy vocabulary is made up of mostly borrowed words from all the eastern european languages, I feel like the numeral system is borrowed from slavonic for example and some very basic prepositions, while current vocabulary is mostly romanian, and I imagine the communities in other countries use the national languages there for neologisms and the like.

it's not even outlandish to suggest this, they're a culture that has lived in eastern europe for close to 700 years, never producing writing, never truly assimilating and never truly settling until recently, so their language is kind of like yiddish is for the ashkenazi jews, essentially a bastardized version of german with loads of slavonic borrowings and some hebrew terms
