alters don't seem to have much (actual) significance in Catholicism. sure theres probably pages and pages of theological fluff about how the alter is the cleavage of the church oh algo
I think its because the ritual sacrifice barely even touches the alter. the actual bread or wine never even touch the marble always in cups or dishes. so it doesn't even feel that sacrilegious. I like in paganism they do fucked up things at those alters, like in orthia they get all the young guys and beat the shit out of them with whips until they collapse or die they would probably piss themselves from the pain and the alters are just surrounded with trash and refuse from animal killing and burning shit and smashing ceramic votives.
