Japan lost the pop culture race against korea because of too much emphasis on childish cute idols like akb 48 catering exclusively to weebs and otakus. They have countless idols wearing the same maid outfits and singing the same song. They alienated most of the young adults outside japan. Now their stronghold is anime.
