This is both correct and incorrect. Democracy can 'work' of it comes through top down reform, not bottom up, since many Arab countries are tribal at heart (not Egypt). Also Islamism is a huge issue. They are politically powerful, and very antidemocratic. Before the 70s, secular democracy was a real option. And I'd argue in the 2020s they've been weakened enough where democratization can happen despite them. It's far more complicated than 'Arab monkeys need big stick'

My mom's clan got burnt by this really badly because most of their wealth was stored in land because they were landowners by trade, and Abdel-nasser didn't warn anyone before announcing he'd expropriate the land of anyone who had more than 250 hectares. Flooded the market with cheap undervalued land for farmers who didn't know how to use it. Land monopolies didn't stop, really wealthy landowners (unlike my maternal clan that got shafted) just hired middlemen to buy up 250 hectare plots and bought them back after the reform went into effect. Very basic way to gain popular support but I'm mad about it because i could've not had to toil or work if this hadn't happened. It's over.
