Probably the same static electricity that causes the flash also releases heat that causes the harsh disruption of air particles. Both happen at the same time but light travels faster than sound so we see the flash first and hear the sound later depending on how far it is. I don't remember the technical explanation but that makes sense to me after living in the mountains and seeing fireworks set off a few miles below me.
