Apparently a lot of people are surprised that nafri countries and Tunisia in particular publish almost all their research in french and english instead of Arabic. By the time we modernized (19th century) Arabic wasn't a language in which correct sciences get published or translated. It was centuries behind in science and education, there was no internet back then so it's not like translating and copying said translations was an easy task back then. Even now Arabic is not a language of academia.
It makes sense and It worked out great for Tunisia in the end but we need to quicken the push to replace french with either English or Chinese.

We publish more scientific papers than china per Capita, I'm hopeful that in the future if this keeps up we'll be an internal hub for scientific research and achievement

Late 19th century, there was an attempt to modernize education and government to mirror the European ones but then colonization came and cut it short but it then resumed post independence in the 20th century.
