you should know that Portuguese navigators were the first europeans to separate the southern cross from the centaurus constellation, and consciously use it as a symbol of the Southern Hemisphere, associating it with the act of "carrying the cross" to the discovered lands, so Brazil was the first country in the southern hemisphere to use it in heraldry or official terms.
Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, etc., only copied the symbol later.
