During XVI and XVII centuries France alone had the same population than all Spanish empire or all Ottoman empire respectively.

Medieval French had a lot of sexo, o algo

France merely treated its colonies as extensions of its feudal system. Shame really.

French colonialism in the Americas had two purposes:
1. Make fat stacks from sugar plantations
2. Piss off the brits in North America
That was it, they knew what they were doing but France never spent as many ressources on colonialist pursuits as the other colonial powers did, not that the country really could with the Hasburgs breathing down their neck

You wouldn't be french though retard, since you wouldn't even exist, your existence would have been replaced with that of an ethnic french. I don't know how that's hard for chuddy thirdies to understand.

They literally traded all their north american possessions outside of one fishing village on a shithole island just so they could keep their Caribbean holdings

Seething Spaniard implying that so-called """empire""" wasn't mostly empty land with a few small settlements here and there like every other empire in history.

French colonialism was mostly a measure for profit due to having plenty of habitable and arable lands unlike England or Netherlands for example.

People love to talk shit about Spanish ex-colonies, but none of ours are the absolute nightmare niggerhell that French ex-colonies are today.

It amazes me that France is the only European power that still has land in continental South America (French Guyana). I don't understand how you guys get away with it.
The US absolutely made sure to kick Spain out of the New World, but many of Euro nations still have territories in the Caribbean and so on.

>French Guyana
Unironically it's because the colony failed incredibly hard. There were many attempts at developing the colony further during the 17th and 18th century and every time the new settlements would die from disease / get raided by natives / get pillaged by the Dutch or Brits.

Then the country just sort of gave up on the land and used it as a penal colony until the 50s. No other powers tried taking it again because why would they? It's a big piece of jungle that's very underdeveloped and tucked away in a corner of the world no one cared about much at that point.

Since the territory's population was so small and they started getting showered in gibs post ww2 they never really gave a shit about independence themself. They get welfare, healthcare, education, voting rights in France, they can even move to the mainland if they want to. There's like 250 000 of them, fucking Luxembourg has a bigger population so there never was a big enough upper class there to cultivate independentist thoughts.

Also fuck off, of course French ex-colonies are shithole, they weren't settler colonies for the most part. You can't compare Niger to Argentina

I don't understand why so many people use this cope. If anything, controlling huge swaths of land with very little population has more merit to it.

>>216596917
Because if you actually showed on a map the places Spain had direct control of said map would look a lot less impressive. There's nothing wrong with that though, we did the same thing in North Africa to have a bigass FRANCE plastered all over the Sahara on every map

You do realize that
>More population + more settlements = more taxes + more products
Right? That goes without saying that those huge swaths of land weren't even controlled or even surveyed for resources but merely claimed by law and all of that.
It's not a cope, it's merely the irrefutable criticism of every "le big blob border gore" in history.

The Iranian guy isn't wrong, though, this applies to all empires.

I've seen this argument used against Spain mostly by Brits, as if colonies like Canada or Australia weren't 99% unpopulated wasteland while Brits had it and even still today.
Same thing with the Russian Empire and their conquest of Siberia. It's just a dumb argument overall. Of course empires own massive amounts of empty land.
