Also, her brother is a law enforcement officer and former United States Marine Corps member who once went absent without leave, but now he’s in the Special Weapons and Tactics team with the Los Angeles Police Department, and he received Veterans Affairs honors. By the way, have you seen that new Supreme Court of the United States ruling, or were you busy memorizing the new homeowners association rules or whatever?

Both are used but it helps in that it refers to the specific office in its self as opposed to something similar sounding or at a different time.
SCOTUS is used in law because there exist other courts with "supreme court" in their name like state Supreme courts or even Appellate courts.
POTUS refers to the Office of the Presidency rather than just Trump, same with saying "the administration" or "the admin." Similarly president is used in other purposes unrelated to the American president such as in any group where there is a presiding leader.
