This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translations and MTL is highly recommended.

what happened to this general, where has everybody been?
>>49415680We've always been slow but the last general just fucking died after a few posts for some reason and no one bothered to make another thread. I like this thread through and still want it to keep going.
On vol 5 of otomege heroine survival. Frankly I don't see any need of making it a game scenario story but reading through heroine's 死んで俺の糧になれ actions while considering that she was supposed to be the og game's heroine does make it a bit entertaining. The school arc's a bit boring though, hope it gets better later
>>49417958>identify yourself goy, or else...Nah I think I'm fine with discussing LNs here.
>オタク御用達のシュレディンガー博士はモテ男
uh he was little bit more than just popular with the ladies
>>49415680>What happenedThe infamous hacker known as 4chan was hacked! News at 11.
At least the bigger boards are (very slightly) better now.
>EveryoneAlive and well, no longer a NEET tho, so I can't post as much as I used to. Also, latest Reitaisai and Fossilized Wonders made me want to finish me backlog. On the LN side, am still waiting for new Dendro.
Please recommend LNs were the MC gets a small harem of 2 or 3 women and they actually have sex
>>49421129are you a manganigger or something? outside the small normalnigger window of 2020-2022 basically all harem novels are like that

Got around to finishing the fourth volume of あした、裸足でこい. I kind of saw that ending coming, but I didn't expect Makoto to fucking drown to death. Poor girl. I'll finish up the last volume when I have time next week, but I really like this series.

Almost done with pic related.
I gotta say its very rare that in these types of senki segments the plans goes completely wrong and they get fucked.
Like allies suddenly betraying you and so on, very decent novel in general I was pleasantly surprised, it definitely had a weak start though there's no need for naisei shit in senki in general probably that's why I felt that way in the beginning but it was enjoyable.
>>49416352Completed the main story. Not bad but was mediocre throughout its length. Not leveraging the heroine's cool factor to its capacity is such a waste. Also I don't like this type of ending where the strong willingly take on the shackles
>>49427607>Not leveraging the heroine's cool factor to its capacity Eh? I thought she was cool as fuck right the way through with her John Wick antics.
>>49428494She was and is actually the reason I actually gave the series a read. Could have been cooler though, especially in the later half when her severity gets a bit toned down.
Where can I find audio books with subs?
There are 4 parts 100gb each on nyaa, but how can I find specific ones?
It'd be cool if a light novel can get picked up and get a media adaptation like comics and manga often do
>>49429770But they do get adapted?
Fuck off
This is now an Arifureta thread
>>49430258レイプ. Are the afterstory sales any good? Feels like no one gave a shit about the vol on the jp side
>>49430360Don't care enough to look it up but given it's old content and almost no changes, it's must've been mid-tier at best. They need to push out succeeding volumes already so that Abyssgate's harem get an official character designs.
Hi, does anyone know of a link or app where I can search for illustrations for novels that haven't been translated yet? Or where I can search for the name of the novel in Japanese and see the illustrations appear? Please leave the link.
Does anyone have Kuro no Senki volumes 5 and 7-11?
>>49431975You could try searching on Baidu. Chinese posters often share LN illustrations on Baidu and BiliBili boards.
>>49429647>With subsJust use the book?
>>49433545Uhh ok still where can I find just audio books
I got a craving for housewifeslop, what's some recs besides tenshi-sama
>>49435244A craving for what?
>>49421129just read Mushoku Tensei if you haven't already
I wish the scene for japanese novels were as large as it is for the light novels. there are so many books that I'd like to read that are just never archived anywhere. whereas with english novels you can search for a random ass self help book published as some nobody's first novel and there's always a 50/50 chance it'll be uploaded somewhere.
one of the only times being a poorfag neet starts to actually feel shitty.
>>49435607What do you want to read?
so a few high priorities are ニンギョウがニンギョウ、2005年のロケットボーイズ、増大派に告ぐ、誘拐ラプソディー、!(by ninomiya atsuto which is most shocking, not a single upload?)
>>49435179I'm actually subscribed to japanese audible because it's just 'all books free while subscribed' instead of the weird " you can buy one book for free every month" thing the western ones do
>>49435756Sorry I can't actually help you, I was just curious.
I guess looking out for sales on the kindle store and good deals on second hand books at places like rakuten and yahoo auctions is the best you can do.
>>49435756first is on nyaa
sadly in txt format
>>49435379SOL romance where the characters are essentially (or maybe actually) married and its mostly centered on them, similar to tonari no tenshi
Completed フシノカミ. The author can write some very poetic and heart-moving expressions like calling the preservation of knowledge as 時の暴君に抗える崇高な聖戦 or calling the loss of aeroplane tech 歴史の空から墜落した夢. If only he was any good at making the story interesting...

>>49450696Not a lot of work actually, though Gemini dramatically sped up the process of figuring it out.
basically epubs are archives (the more you know) html-ish files contain the actual book and the Chinese had the courtesy to grey out jap text, so find and replace <p> tags without styling (appropriate regex also thanks to Gemini, I never bothered to learn how to write regex) then likewise un-grey the leftover text, then pack it back together
>>49451061nope
How do I get over the feeling that I'm disrespecting the author or the characters if I'm listening to an LN audiobook while doing something else?
>>49452734If you're doing something relatively mindless like driving, then it's fine since most of your attention is going to be on the audiobook.
>>49452734Consider the limited time available to you which would stop you from experiencing the work in the first place if not for the option to listen while doing stuff
>>49437514Anyone dumb will just fap to the cute girls, make a soijack face while the MC does something cool then move on.
Anyone smart will do all of the above but also appreciate the tendency otaku have to write schizo subtext that often leaks into full blown text on top of the autistic worldbuiding details, depending on their tastes they will also enjoy the autism that goes into character interactions but you basically need to have 3+ years of flawless JP fluency for that.
Midwits on the other hand will just parrot what they heard from jewtubers, go in full of prejudices, then cry about plot holes that would not be a thing if they didn't speedread (assuming they didn't just watch a recap video outright).

Finished up あした、裸足でこい。Personally, I really liked it a lot. It's more or less a time travel plot with coming of age drama/romance. I thought all of the personal relationships and conflicts were very well done and the plot was consistently interesting. I guess the resolution of the final volume might not please everyone, but it thematically fits. Some nice, heartfelt moments and I liked the ending. Would recommend if this is your cup of tea.
Is anyone else having issues using narou.rb to download from syosetu?
The last time I used narou.rb was two years ago and I downloaded a bunch and today I went to download the remainder of the WN I was reading but I got the errors below.
Yes, I updated narou.rb to the latest version via 'gem narou update' or whatever

I found this
https://github.com/whiteleaf7/narou/issues/445
So, I created a file called ncode.syosetu.com.yaml in my \.narou\ folder and pasted the contents of that github post into it, but it just keeps telling me that it's frozen/suspended.
If I figure this out, I'll post the fix, but I have work to do and might not get a chance to troubleshoot much further until the weekend.

Replacing the contents of ncode.syosetu.com.yaml with the information on that github page I linked did not fix it for me.
I listed my novels and also tried to download a new short story to test it, but it looks like there must be something wrong with the parser because it is saying that they are private or deleted (?)
Maybe I am in the wrong directory... I'm on Win 10, so my file path to the gems folder looks like:

[ERROR] 小説が削除されているか非公開な可能性があります
when trying to download from syosetu.
Go here: https://github.com/whiteleaf7/narou/issues/445
and replace the information at the bottom of ncode.syosetu.com.yaml
That yaml file is going to be in your gems folder, on Windows, something like:
C:\Ruby31-x64\lib\ruby\gems\3.1.0\gems\narou-3.9.1\webnovel
Once you replace that, you should be able to download again. If one of the novels has been frozen, just run 'narou freeze _' where you replace _ with the id number of the frozen novel (which can be found by running 'narou list')

>>49419926>On the LN side, am still waiting for new Dendro.Kaido said that SP3 will probably drop before Vol 23. I'm starting to suspect that the main LN's glacial release schedule is because of Taiki.
Also, SP3 will be centered around Greatest One and its defeat. Kaido originally planned to include the Moby Dick story too, but he went crazy with the Greatest One story and expanded it from the WN's 6K characters to 60K and realized that adding another separate story would make for awkward reading, so he decided to expand the Greatest One story by a further 40K+ and make it its own volume.
He finished writing that and is now preparing to resume the main WN too, which is good to know, considering the cliffhanger.

Hi, somewhat new to LNs and generally not a huge fan of what I've encountered. But recently I read the two Dirty Pair novels which were translated into English and enjoyed them quite a bit. I'm looking for recs on something similar? Fun, frothy, a bit of fan service, action and/or sci-fi a plus, female MCs especially. Anything similar in tone?
>>49565302looks like a westoid novel
just go read that instead
>>49565308>westoid? It was an Japanese LN from the 80s. Thanks for the helpful response, I don't know what I expected from the miserable fucks on /jp/.
>>49565302Required reading is Mushoku Tensei around these parts Sonny Jim.
After that you can read whatever.
>>49565302I was gonna say Ryoko's Case Files sounds like your thing but I don't think it's been translated.
>>49562665Sometimes rebuild world makes me think that the author is just milking it with it's vague/unexplained plot and the MC incrementally getting stronger to eventually, one day, complete Alpha's request. But even in volumes that feel kind of filler (like the 賞金首 one), the plot does move forward at least a bit, and plot points connect, so it doesn't feel too episodic and I can forgive it for that.
Vol. 6下 was a banger and reminded me of the feeling of 死後報復依頼プログラム (vol. 2下). The ending was... yeah I was surprised the author had the guts to do that. Those characters he built up and now their storyline ends just like that. It kind of makes me think like... did the author have something else planned with them and gave up on it, or was this necessary to move the story forward? He didn't do it just to be edgy right? I liked those characters and they were pretty well fleshed out so it was surprising. I've been listening to the audiobook, but might just read the rest of the PDFs now because audible update schedule is slow.
Also please use spoiler tags for people that haven't read it yet.
>>49567380NTA but I expected far more niche interests here, seeing entry level stuff like MT get recommended is pretty sad.
May as well just stay on /a/ at that point.
>>49567380>Mushoku TenseiAn anon asks a genuine question and all they get are sarcasm. At least you didn't recommend he play Touhou danmaku games.
>>49568443>>49568452He said he’s somewhat new to LNs, in which case first you read masterpieces like Mushoku and then whatever is my opinion, simple as.
>>49570155>masterpieces like Mushokukek
lets just close the thread at this point and go to /r/lightnovels

>>49570165I don’t care about your ironic autism tbqh, you have been mad about this series for ages now but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a masterpiece. Maybe you should recommend something you like instead, I guarantee though it won’t be as good as MT.
>>49565302dirty pair was great, good taste anon
>>49568059Is there info about when this series is going to be completed? Web novel was stopped unfinished and LN is not even there yet.
Does anyone have volumes 2 & 3 of 眠らない魔王とクロノのセカイ? It's pretty good.
New tool to make epub files from narou and Kakuyomu links

i refuse to believe that anyone who uses linux are actual weebs who are experienced in exploring most there is to offer on the weeb side of the internet
>>49574364it was also a thing for nerds
was, because since 2018 or so it became yet another nu-punk shit for trannies to pretend to be antiestablishment while dicksucking corps like valve
Might be a dumb question but as someone who’s enjoyed a lot of light novels but has read much Japanese novels outside of that section , how exactly are they different from the rest of Japanese literature? Why is it separated? Is it just the YA of Japan?
>>49575160>Is it just the YA of Japan? Was supposed to be originally, when the term was coined in the late 70's. But by the end of the millenium it came to mean any lit mainly focused towards the otaku audience, even if the content expanded beyond what one may categorize as YA. Because publishing houses always create separate labels to gather their otaku-oriented publications under, in practice the term came to stand for works published under these labels even if it lacks the characteristics someone would expect from a "lightnovel"
>>49575160light novel is when you imagine the characters as anime, normal novel is when you imagine them as real people
>>49575328>>49577716Most publisher's bunko labels have anime style illustrations now lol.
Someone knows if 死体泥棒 from Setoguchi has epub ver? cant find it
>>49580570Neither this nor Psyche got released as ebooks and no scans exist as far as I'm aware, your best bet is buying it yourself.
Can someone help me satisfy a craving for some ruthless will-to-power edgelord kino?
>>49570155>He said he’s somewhat new to LNs, in which case first you read masterpieces like MushokuI said I was new to LNs and didn't like most of them. I didn't say I love unmitigated crap unrelated to my request. Do you recommend people McDonald's when they ask for a decent sushi bar?
On MT, seems like 蛇足3 got a lot of material after lala leaving home added. It's been like 7-8 years since we got a progress in the story's timeline
Has anyone read やり直し令嬢は竜帝陛下を攻略中? Wondering how the WN and LN compare because I can't find all LN volumes to download.
>>49412403 (OP)>https://github.com/whiteleaf7/narouOh wow I wish I had come here before using this one https://github.com/setsumi/Syosetu-Downloader-plus
It bulk downloads a chapter range but doesn't auto convert to ebook. Would have saved me a ton of trouble having to merge all txt files then mess with calibre and kindle previewer myself. Thanks a ton for this.
Might want to also add anna's archive to the OP. It has a bunch of LNs.

>>49559767>old kuroboshi kouhakuAbsolute soul.
Too much to read and I read too slowly!
I read the first volume of Invaders of Rokujouma and found it excruciatingly dull. Does this actually get better? Or is it one of those Stockholm Syndrome situations where people have convinced themselves it's good because they've read 20 of them already?
>>49588492A lot of the 10+ volume stuff that gets routinely shilled here sounds like people are talking out of stockholm syndrome.
Roku, 7ken, dendro, MT, etc.
Dendro in particular starts off strong but then becomes a slog after franklin's game and by now it's fucking glacial with the war namek.
MT has exactly 6 good volumes then it enters an eternal academy arc it never recovers from.
>>49587993>*old* [artistname] is goodAnyone else feel it's disrespectful to Japanese artists?
>>49590259With Kuroboshi I think both eras of their art are good.
>>49590259No? Unless you're implying I "only" like his old stuff which I didn't say at all.
After re-reading shinja zero I came to the conclusion that I'm a speed reader. Can't believe that with all this foreshadowing I still got surprised by the fact that makoto was abel during my first read
>>49588492i only watched the anime but i thought it was ok. i always meant to pick it up but every time i check it more and more volumes are out so i'm just waiting for it to finally end first
