Touhou community was a obnoxious small group, but very passionate and creative. You can tell that they loved that thing.
Touhou hijacks always managed to get a reaction, and attract new fans to the setting.
4chan and the Internet Forum Culture was red hot, allowing for the fandom to spread even further and cement themselves as a pillar of the Japanese Internet Culture.
Flash was a wonderful tool to make memes and small games, Touhou fans literally used this tool to it's limits.
A whole shitload of merch was made and buying them was easier.
Touhou porn was THE thing.
3rd world didn't have widespread internet.
Touhou fandom was welcoming and accepted the new blood easily.
