Seems like we don't have a dedicated Key thread, so I was wondering what /jp/'s opinions of Kanon are. I was planning to read it for myself but I wonder if the new steam version is good or should I find an older one.

If you're concerned about missing the H-scenes then don't worry, they're complete garbage and designed to be removable from the game without affecting anything. I remember one of them takes place before any dating or confession even happens and the characters just randomly fuck and it never gets mentioned again. The H-scenes are on that level, also they're not voiced.

Also the anime adaptation by KyoAni is good and you should watch it if you haven't.

I think Kanon and Air are basically prototypes for Clannad

Full disclosure I'm touring through here but I did finish this game a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it. It gave me a joyful feeling when the music would play in my head when I was going about my day and I'd think about the game situation and wonder what was gonna happen. My playthrough went down the Mai tangent. I wasn't all that happy about it because I didn't really enjoy her character (or lack thereof) and I wanted to interact more with the other girls. I thought Mai's ending was a bit abrupt too. The play through I did made me want to play it again and focus on an other girl so I think it's effective as a game in that sense in that encourages me to play it again. I watched the anime too which I also enjoyed. It kind of sucked my desire to play it a bit, but I think I probably will just later on.
I randomly learnt about Snow (2003) today which I'm gonna check out next.

I saw the anime of that before Kanon. I tend to agree Clannad seems more refined but it's not tonnes better imo. I like both a fair bit.
From what I read about Air isn't it like a lot more supernaturally oriented?
Oh and as for the sex scenes, they weren't like nut bustingly awesome by any means but it was a nice saucey inclusion, and it's intriguing wondering when they're gonna happen.

I'm only an anime tourist for now, but I'm thinking of picking up the games when their respective seasons come around. Especially Kanon since I foolishly watched it when it's almost summer kek.
Anyway, out of the original Key trinity I liked Clannad the least because of the deus ex machina at the end.
Air I also felt didn't live up to its potential. The present and past events feel almost entirely disconnected. If you squint hard enough you can see Misuzu and Kanna have similar names but nothing came of it in the end. The girl really just died to unexplained ligma.
So that leaves Kanon. While I don't think it's perfect, the low points didn't bother me as much as those in the other two. I found the whole cast likable as well (Mai a bit less so, she does lack character).
They really knocked the atmosphere and music out of the park with these games though. Godlike OPs and EDs. Some of the BGMs play in my head when I go about my day as well. I miss the early 00s bros

I remember hearing that Key VNs only ever included H-scenes because your VN was practically doomed to fail without them in the 90s

You didn't get what was going on in Air. But the anime is only 12 episodes so it has to rush through the plot. Kanon and Clannad fared better since they got longer adaptations and could flesh things out more. Do read the Air VN if you get a chance since it's better.

It's not my favorite Key story (that would be Clannad) but I think it's their best game, viewed as how fun it is to play as a game.

It's not a deus ex machina, it's the outcome of the symbolic and metaphorical underpinning that the entire story and characters are working under. If you aren't comprehending what the story is about on that level then the ending is not going to work for you. That being said, the technical function of how the ending occurs is different in the game and had to be changed in order to work in an anime format. The normal VN multiple route format is integral to how the ending functions in the game, which the anime can't really replicate. I do like the emotional impetus that the anime gives it, though. Anyway, I think Clannad is "complete" only if you watch the anime and read the game, because they complement each other in different ways.

This I'm aware, I just called it that because I was unconvinced by the type of outcome they went with. I might as well revisit it then give it a read though since my edginess in the past probably made me judge it more harshly.

Agreed. From what I went through only some of little busters! ecstasy's were worthwhile (no experience with kud wafter's) so it's no wonder key gave up on them

>>49515314
I enjoyed the 2006 adaptation so much to the point I'd put it 1-1 as good as the VN

>>49526256
Air did not get a thorough enough adaptation. The splits between events feel much more natural in the VN and summer segment was zoomed through in the anime; it doesn't have the same poignancy that the ending of the visual novel gave me.
>spoiler
they are connected. I don't remember if this was explained in the anime or not.

So is the new release fine?
H scenes or not doesn't really matter to me
But for some reason I like the vibe of playing older games.
I assume there is no problem?

I haven't played it, so I can't comment on the translation. I know the CGs are going to be cropped since it's widescreen now, unless they have some option to change it to 4:3 again (I don't know). I can tell you, however, that if you play the old fan TL that you're going to have problems with the voice acting. The original Kanon on PC was not voiced (neither were Air or Clannad actually), so for the patch the voice files had to be imported from old console releases, and I know there were bugs such as the voices not working at certain points. Unless you want to deal with that shit I'd just play the Steam release.

Huh, that's quite peculiar
I guess that's what the series was like at the time until it got bigger
I like older games but proper voice acting seems like a better pull. I don't really want to jump through hoops and such just to get the game working only partly.
Thanks, I'll probably just play the steam release.
