The interview you linked to prove your point actually confirms quite the opposte. How can you look at EVERYTHING he said and think all he did for Gou was give "a loose script"? He absolutely intended and wrote the foundation for Satoko and Rika's dynamic. Notice how he has been distancing himself from Reiwa, yet he continues to produce content based on Gou and Sotsu?

Like I always say, if you just want the ending I believe very very strongly that it's been spoiled. Nakao Boushi is a huge Higu fan, he was credited as Ciconia's director. He wrote MYTH which is like a love-letter for old WTC. It takes a lot of meta twists and turns and ends up overlapping with Ciconia incredibly closely at the end.

Though you can probably easily guess what is happening with the stuff you get form shitsugou and the factory.

Booting it up again to grab screenshots I'm realizing I probably don't get most of it.
It feels unfinished in some places, surreal and strange, but it's got a lot of heart so I recommend trying it if you like WTC.

I'm talking very broadly here. It's actually interesting as it's written. But basically the protagonist lives in a static world, a modern world you'd find in the 90s, and an almost utopia. He finds a magic door and crosses a barrier into a very rural very friendly Higurashi-like world. And since it's a world inspired by Higurashi it's very friendly but everything goes wrong after a certain date. After experiencing loops he discovers the Higurashi-like world is being used by witch like being who enacts the tragedy for a certain reason.

In the next act is discovering there's a whole system of these worlds all interconnected in a dreamlike way, like how he found a door into Higurashi land. This part is very reminiscent of how Umineko seems to work. Many different gameboards, and they have different stories and the Asgard world has people with Norse myth names who administer to these, killing the worlds, looping them, or letting them be at their leisure.

In the final act it resembles Ciconia not in story, but in the shape of what I believe Ciconia's meta world is. After moving through different worlds modern, scifi, and back to the Higurashi-like world they discover the truth that the whole meta world system is an AI program. The world ended long ago, they're just former humans recorded into the computer. Odin is the admin program, and her gods (or witches) are humans that are given tasks to make the world an interesting place to live. Enact strange stories and such, forever, eternally in their prison of the computer program that houses their minds, all that is left of humanity after the nukes fell. Odin doesn't want to live out this farce forever so she attempts to shut everything down and end the world. She thinks that in destroying the virtual world the real creator will come back and fix things. Odin just wants to meet her "God".

So basically I think the entire WTC world is a virtual program, the witches are humans with admin rights, perhaps one of the witches in particular is the true admin like Featherine. The factory scene is the lingering memory of their "processing". They're brains and spines in jars. The goal is to make interesting stories at the end of the world since there is nothing really else to do with the last remnants of humanity that has perished.

Odin doesn't get her wish, she dies as the K1 stand-in MC chooses the path of continuing their stories forever. As a record for humanity's existence. It made me really sympathetic to the girl who wanted to end the world. So it's very bittersweet in the end. But more than that it's very dreamlike, very surreal. I'd compare to Lynch even. And also pretty rushed.

Now if it were old Ryukishi when he first wrote Ciconia I can see a whole number of ways to make it hopeful. Like how he made the magic end hopeful. However modern Ryukishi who thinks sotsu can be a happy coming of age cause it was all like a dream in the end I can't see him making it satisfying as he is.

Say they all did exist inside a simulation. So what? The way K1 stood up at the end of Tsumihoroboshi and declared he wouldn't be played with, if he or someone else were to do that again... I'd be filled with hope.

I enjoyed the Umineko chapter 8 and magic ending though I have some contrary thoughts.
At this point though I have to wonder if Ryukishi has gone too far down the magic path if you know what I mean, to write this kind of story. There must be objective truth. You must leave the LCL. If a devil kills you, revives you, and wipes your memory the sin must still exist.

And really, how does everyone's medically induced multiple personality disorder factor into this? That's the x factor that makes me really want to read on with Cicionia.

I like how you phrase it, feeling like a bad end. It gives me Normal Route vibes. Like the dissatisfying conclusion to Undertales normal route. The catharsis of the Pacifist or True route is missing. The crescendo hasn't been revealed

The parallel processor thing intrigues me too. Also Koshka's whole Pandora deal. It also reminds me of The Evil Within. A core 'processor' to maintain the illusory world. But even that explanation feels incomplete in Ciconia's world.

And even with all of that said, the whole 'war is hell' vibe from the story, mixed with a coming of age tale, almost makes me think the nature of reality is going to be a side plot to the main thrust of the story.
To put it in Umineko terms. The digital world feels like a Red Truth. The Pandora/multiple personality disorder part feels like a Blue Truth, and the 'true' points that connect it all, their bonds or the truth of humanity, or what have you, feel like a Golden Truth

I’m not a huge Satoko fan but even I knew that this response was completely out of character for how we know her from OG higurashi. No fucking way she’d ever react like that to finding out what Rika went through. They completely killed what made her likable and realistic.

The new booklet's online version is out. And, yeah, if anyone was wondering, even though it's not branded Gou/Sotsu, R07 clearly wrote Satoko as Gou/Sotsu Satoko.

It's kind of hilarious R07 is now making jokes out of Rika and Satoko using their looper abilities and losing their humanity when he was trying to so hard to defend gou/sotsu as a human story.

Aside from that, it actually officially confirms Ichiro Maebara's job and some of his past, although it should have been pretty obvious.

Also, Mion is writing a manga where she pairs herself with Keiichi, but in order to hide their identities Keiichi is just called "Kei" (蛍), pairing him with a "Mii" also with a different kanji (美), but Shion suggests just outright going with "Kei" and "Mii" with the real kanji, but Mion is too embarrassed to do that but then gets motivated and restarts it.
