i don't know if it's because i've been starved for tragic romance, but StarTRain has really taken me by surprise. i was struggling to take my midday nap because i was quite emotionally tied up with a plot point. maybe it shows more weakness in the heroine routes, but so far it's shaping up to be one of my favourite things i've touched this year

Finished the new DeepOne trial. Pretty short, one chapter with two short battles with monsters. Special effects during fights are great still, they probably poured all their budget into that since the MC isn't even partially voiced this time.
The premise and the fact that there's an antagonist group already makes it more interesting than the first game but said antagonist group didn't show up in the trial so who knows whether they'll actually be fun. They're also doing this meta thing through the flowchart where (You) get to help out by viewing extra scenes that unlock through the game that will contribute to the plot somehow.
The writer took criticism about lack of h-scenes in the first game pretty hard it seems so he threw in sex with the loli right after the prologue battle and has sample h-scenes for the other girls in the trial too. Pretty nice.
Not enough to tell whether the game will actually be good this time, but it's not like us chuunibros are getting anything else this year.

Why are DMM/DLSite/FANZA and other Japanese platforms so stingy with discounts on eroge? I either see prices like 500 yen (only for very old games), or 30%, maybe 50% off at most. I am playing Mitsuki’s route right now, near the end but not quite there yet. For some reason I just really want Takayuki to end up with Haruka, so when he does things like try to run away from Haruka’s room during her sad monologue, I get irritated. In mitsuki's route takayuki does have a little char development (better than none) and getting better in afterstory... I just feel like Mitsuki comes off as naggy and needy in her route when clearly Takayuki was still obsessed with Haruka. I don’t even know why Mitsuki doesn’t just give up on him. Is Takayuki really that worth it? He’s basically working as a waiter with no other career prospects, obsessed with another girl, no real redeeming qualities. If you listen to Kiminozo Drama Theater vol 2 "Hayase Mitsuki" + mitsuki chapter 3, I think you'll understand a bit more, it's because she doesn't have anyone else to rely on but takayuki... after the accident she went shock due to the strong guilt and her clubmates were spreading bad rumors, and her parents disappointed to her since she abandoned everything. So yeah she didn't care about anything else but to take care of takayuki until he's getting better. Even mitsuki's father who finally knows the truth told her that, she doesn't have any choice but to cling with him because it is what she "earned" after the sacrifices she had done and she should cherish him. it sounds kinda nasty but that's her consequences afterall.

Don't kill me but I found the wrong?forbidden?unhealthy?twisted? love between mitsuki and takayuki is so "hot" that I ship them, idk why, maybe since I was on a broken state that time... The heroines with an after story are Mitsuki, Haruka, and Akane. These are awful other than Mitsuki's. Mitsuki's is a good continuation of what would actually happen after her route, tying up some loose ends, etc. The others are retarded melodrama similar to the Sumika after story from Muv-Luv.

That being said, the game also comes with an alternate version of Chapter 1 (the high school segment) that lets you take control of that and date different girls at that point (or change what happens to Haruka). This is good and one of the high points of the VN, so make sure to read all of that.

A bit more detail, this is exactly the same as the normal chapter 1 up until you get to the new branch points. If you date Haruka it's the same up until you get "that" at which point you get a new choice to stop it, and thus a different ending. If you reject Haruka you get short routes for Mitsuki, Akane (middle school ver.), and Manami.

Well if IC had an alternate version like this, the routes would basically break down like
1. Date Setsuna and get the normal IC ending
2. Date Setsuna but stay with her and don't cheat on her with Kazusa
3. Reject Setsuna and end up dating Kazusa instead, and she doesn't leave for Europe
4. Possible Chiaki route since she's the only other heroine that's actually at the high school and the branch point for rejecting Setsuna would be after the school festival which is where Chiaki becomes interested in Haruki (Kiminozo gives Manami, who's a side heroine, a route in its alternate chapter 1 since she's the only extra heroine present at that point, so this would be similar to that)

I wished it was longer (need more Hayase Family scenes or wedding scene since they already had a plan) but after playing Haruka's afterstory that took ~2x of Mitsuki's afterstory length I think the shorter the better keks. I'm glad Mitsuki's afterstory doesn't have forced ahh Relationship Problem melodrama unlike the others because it would be very OOC of Mitsuki or Takayuki if one of them suddenly doubt their own feelings after the dramatic that hill scene in her route. However my real problem is one: Mitsuki's pregnancy red herring. Takayuki lamented that he never wears contraception, however in ch 2 contraception was mentioned. Apparently the writer forgot abt it. fortunately it's not the central drama of her route and it resolved quickly. Mitsuki's autumn outfit is the true perfection. I want to see more of her smile with that outfit.

There are some games where the skip setting affects ctrl behavior or there is even separate setting from time to time but in overwhelming majority of games skip setting only affects regular skip function which is called from the UI while ctrl is used as forced skip no matter what.
It could be annoying if you have some separate key bindings for ctrl but it's pretty much universal convention in the eroge industry to have ctrl as forced skip, so there is no choice but to adapt to it.

You can't really rely on vndb for accuracy. Most of its information is populated by people looking at the CG gallery on sadpanda and haven't read the game at all, or by people who only read games after they've been translated to a language other than Japanese (thus putting them years in the past.) I'd say about half of the stuff I read is missing tags, themes, even entire characters. That's not counting new releases, which are (by necessity) completely untagged.

it's a good question. i'd say i would recommend nijuuei even to those who don't really like scaji after reading works like suba and sakuuta, since it is largely a standout from his catalog. to summarize very simply, it's a mystery story set in the early edo period that incorporates old japanese literature into its main narrative. it's mostly a work that shines through its historical references since you'll find numerous references to classic japanese literature, historical events, old martial arts, and so on.

it tackles philosophy, as you'd expect from scaji, but i'd say it's far more digestible and less intrusive than most of his other works, and this is conveyed by what drives the protagonist, sougen - a person who has lived through the blade since birth for nothing other than his own survival as someone who exists between the boundary.

the main narrative focuses mainly on the mysteries surrounding awahomurajima and its protagonist, the game has heroines but they're not really the focus and despite the fact that the game has "endings" for each heroine, it's mainly about the protagonist in the end. you'll wander around the island, gradually unveiling its mysteries through what i consider to be one of the best aspects of the game: its atmosphere. it's a tense story, but also very soothing. it's the kind of work that can make you feel at peace with your own mind. the short but stunning soundtrack is a great help in this regard too.

i'd say it's worth a try since the story isn't very long. the biggest problem, though, is that it's a real pain in the ass to run on PC nowadays, so good luck with that. if anyone wants to try it but can't run it on PC, i'd recommend running the dreamcast version via redream, there's voice acting compared to the PC version (if you can run the PC version, someone released a patch for the PC version a while ago).
