They have no discipline, no drive for sustained conflict, limited problem-solving skills, and after sustained contact with the enemy you would likely end the war with more of them than you started with, after losing it due to the above to points.

They have no discipline, no drive for sustained conflict, limited problem-solving skills, barely enough strength to handle the recoil of a plinker let alone to ruck supplies any meaningful distance, and after prolonged contact with the enemy you would likely end the war with more of them than you started with, after losing it due to the above points.

>They have no discipline
How do you explain fairy maids then? Besides, you don't need sustainable front-line to be held, using fairies and not going for irregular warfare consisting of is a waste of their skills. You just need to keep them coherent for small engagements.
>no drive for sustained conflict
True, but they have a yearning for fun in their very nature. Making them equate fighting your enemy with fun is a matter of presentation.
>limited problem-solving skills
Not necessarily true, after all pranks are standard for all fairies, while some of them are quite devious. Groups of more simple-minded fairies executing plans and orders of officer-like smarter fairy could work.

>How can you explain the fairy maids
Largely useless and entirely carried by Sakuya.
>they have a yearning for fun in their very nature
War isn't fun.
>after all pranks are standard for all fairies, while some of them are quite devious
Pranks require resources to execute and are largely carried by the fact they're being conducted on familiar territory. Try and make a fairy conduct a prank in the middle of the city and she will be caught in between pilfering for materials.
>Groups of more simple-minded fairies executing plans and orders of officer-like smarter fairy could work.
That was what occurred in the conclusion of Touhou Sangetsusei. The fairies ended up defeating themselves.

But wouldn't it be, if there were no consequences? No getting killed, no getting maimed. You won't remember anything traumatic long enough to scar your psyche.

Dying is possibly in the top 10 worse things that can happen to you in a war, but it certainly isn't #1. There are other consequences like a strain on relationships, loss of property (something that was the cause for the first Fairy War), lifestyle compromises: a fairy isn't going to stick around for two years in a trench unless she's committed enough to something that it's actualized to her memory.
>No getting maimed.
On the contrary, maiming would likely be more common than death to discourage fairies once the enemy caught wind of their attributes.

There might be a few niches you can use Fairies for in a military, but you wouldn't want them as frontline infantry unless you could reliably control them somehow.
I guess maybe you could use them as cheap drone replacements maybe? Strap bombs, tell them where to go, give them their sweets or pay or whatever when they respawn. Even then, you'll want to keep it to short distances.
