This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translations and MTL is highly recommended.

Anyone has the Beltorchika's Children light novel in Japanese?
>>49601965That reminds me that I haven't read Tomino's novels for some reason despite being a huge gundamfag.
モン肉 vol 4 in July it seems, battle for north America continues vs the Not Canadian/Viking/Slavoid empire.
And still reading "The Apothecary Diaries".
Is hard for me to believe, but instead of waiting for the free version to appear I really went and subscribed to J-Novel and purchased volume 14.
First LN volume ever that I pay money, and they say piracy causes damage. Would never ever have purchased a single volume if not for the pirate versions.
why did my rec of humanity has declined kill the last thread
>>49607857I'll read it one day.
>>49607857You could say... the thread has declined.
>>49606709I've been in that situation where I've paid for something because I couldn't find the pirated version.
>>49615360Same.
Had to do it with Honzuki and most recently LLENN's newest volume.
Kaido pretty much confirmed that Dendro's glacial LN release flow is because of the artists' schedules.
>〇【魔神】アム
>(=ↀωↀ=)<実は最近ちょこちょこと書籍の方で情報書いてて23巻とSP3にも入ってます
>(=ↀωↀ=)<……早くイラストレーター様方のスケジュール空かないかな
And today he said that vol 23 and SP3 won't come out until at least Autumn.
Goddammit, Taiki.
>>49601699I've noticed that the author gets better at writing, on a technical level, as I've slowly read through the volumes. It's nice.
if anyone has volume 2 of どうでもいい世界なんて that would be great.
I hate Audible for having 80% of the new releases be fujoshit and 10% of the last remaining 20% having male narrators.
I want to meet the genius that decided that a male should narrate danmachi
>>49637712The male narrator trying to do high pitched voices for Mimi and Chris in the space mercenary one is so silly
>>49637712Do women prefer male narrators?
Any good conflict-based LNs/WNs like Nanatsuma and Dendro?
Non-harems preferable. Not gay, but I don't like women in high doses.
>>49654511You made me think about it and I find it surprising that they are clearly fewer nowadays compared to pre-2015, if what you want is what I think it is. 筺底のエルピス is the only one I can remember from the top off my head that isn't a harem. I can list a few that are harem though, and more that aren't exactly character-focused conflicts but scratch the same itch nonetheless

There's a new collection on the block. It should have stuff not uploaded before.
>>49666265And still no 銀盤カレイドスコープ baka.
>>49666265>It should have stuff not uploaded before. Is it though? Just did a rough search for some series I wanted and leave aside new vols, it doesn't even have some of the stuff uploaded on the moeway. Well, still going to seed it though because this one's better organized.
Apologies for my autism, but do women feel the same amount of disgust towards female characters in male-oriented novels that I do towards male characters in female-oriented novels?
Really can't stand the way those lads are written.
I just finished Ascendase of a bookworm and I want to kill myself. I never finished a series so long before.
Quick give me some recommendations to fill the void please
>>49668739Primarily no, because that kind of way of writing female characters is the norm. Just as women are used to seeing seductive girls on billboards everywhere they go, they're just as used to 2D girls being the perfect wife material with shallow lines of thinking revolving only around the male protagonist. I imagine if we were put in a world with reversed gender morals we'd be just as apathetic towards all the shallow male characters meant solely to appeal to females, since it'd dominate most media and just be as acceptable as the dense protagonist trope or something. You don't particularly like it, but you don't get fired up every 1000th time you see it because you've come to accept that's just how the average light novel is.
>>49668950Read the fanbooks, short story collections and hannerole's sequel. And if you can read japanese there are also few unpublished short stories on narou. There's also some god fanfic on pixiv if you are not still sated
>>49668950Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon
For any buyfags here, Surugaya is currently doing 20% off any order of 20+ books w/ free shipping.
Anyone read ずたぼろ令嬢は姉の元婚約者に溺愛される? Any good?
Caught up with the himo seikatsu manga. It was good but just misses the kind of anticipative tension that generally pushes me to read the novel. So if anyone read it here, are the novels entertaining?
>>49669251>shallow lines of thinking>shallow character>tropesSo true... We need to fix Japan and their sloppy writing. Ugh. Like, literally? A shallow 2d waifu trope again? Can they not subvert their tropes and make something that explores the limitation of the medium, like DDLC? LNs really are the YA of Japan.
what's the best isekai light novel?
>>49673374Trying too hard.
Anyone have the raws for カット&ペーストでこの世界を生きていく? Would really appreciate it if someone does.
Hi, does anyone have the FANZA version of 脱法テイマーの成り上がり冒険譚 ~Sランク美少女冒険者が俺の獣魔になっテイマす~ 1 2 3 4? I would really appreciate it if anyone had it
>>49654600>筺底のエルピスDo you have volumes from 5 to 8?
Do I need to have a japanese address to buy digital light novels on amazon jp? I have an account with my addres that I use to buy the occasional plamo but for light novels only the physical ones are available. Does it go against the terms of use or something or can I just add a random japanese address?
>>49679829depends on the platform but you need to make a new account altogether, through a jp vpn, then have a jp address but you can use a mcdonalds or something for that step
amazon are niggers and you basically have to even do the purchases through vpn iirc
>>49679829Never used a vpn, and my address is set to hokkaido's prefectural office. Can buy digital books on amazon just fine. There is some stufd, mostly r18, that won't appear if you don't use vpn though
>lightning=稲妻 is from the empirical observation that an year with lots of thunderstorms tend to have higher rice yields (leading to the belief that lightning gives fertility)
Reading 戦国小町苦労譚 and it is a comfy read with a lot of interesting tidbits about japanese culture. I only have the basic knowedge about the time period so probably missing out on a lot of stuff that would have been entertaining for sengoku ota. Still a good read nevertheless
How do I rip books from kobo jp? My kepub folder is empty
>>49683596I miss the times when I could just download the books from rakuten and click a button in calibre.
Now I've given up and just patiently wait for the day that my entire library or account gets deleted for some random reason
Is there some place aside from nyaa where you can find audiobooks?
>>49688446japanese audible is actually worth it. You pay ~9 $/€ to download as much as you want (use Libation to rip the books)
Not a satisfying inventory for anyone who reads a lot of LNs though. Works are increasingly getting adapted though so hope it will have all the LN classics atleast in a few years

Anyone got 夏に溺れる?
It seems an award winning work or something
Buying the early volumes of novel to support it is so depressing. Really feels like an industry small enough to where every (untranslated) purchase makes a difference but I bet if I calculated how many series' I've bought that make it past Volume 3 it'd probably be under 10%. Especially sucks when I see something that I know I'd personally enjoy but has zero chance in hell of dodging the axe. Almost want to buy it but never read it just to give the author his 50 yen and move on.
>>49689562>but has zero chance in hell of dodging the axepretty much the only ones that do axing are the mainline kadokawa label and for whatever godforsaken reason, alphapolis
everything else is so small that as long as you recoup the costs for the trees your murdered to get your shit printed you can keep going, you need to royally piss off your (already niche) fanbase which is already hard as fuck when the only people that would stay around for your shit are people that like your writing so much to borderline start a cult over it and will praise literally anything you do short of literal cuckoldry and EVEN THEN you will still have some loyal zealots
though it's not impossible, as seen by the lazy dungeon master fiasco that did get his ass axed
>>49689723By "axe" I didn't strictly mean the publisher dumps the writer's ass, just anything that halts progress with no hope of recuperation. I know (assume) it's usually the writer himself abandoning it from lack of inspiration/it not doing well enough to support a living/having project ADHD. Doesn't make it any better though

>>49693711Don't do it, it turned to shit more than 10 volumes ago.
>>49695606>no justificationAJA?
>>49695606Considering the series is essentially a bunch of short stories, I highly doubt that.
>>49681949completed vol 16 which is the last one I can find on the high seas. Such a great atmosphere, makes me want to read more with the 和洋折衷 that's edo-oriented instead of meiji., so please give me recs if you know. Also , does anyone here have the next two vols? I will probably buy them on the next sale if not.
>>49668950Go back to book 1 and read them again. There's a lot more you pick up on the 2nd time around.
>>49695613>>49695747And he wrote like one good story in each of the last 4 volumes I have read, you talk like writing good short stories is easy.
>>49698305It's pretty much just the same formula though. I feel like you either like it or you don't. It's hard to imagine the quality changing wildly unless he dramatically changes styles or something in the later volumes.
out of curiosity is there any VAs that are specifically know just for doing audiobooks because there's this husband and wife duo that seem to do every new fantasy book series and Iirc Black library has 3-4 people that narrate most of the 400+ Warhammer books
>>49668950is it that good? what's the appeal, immersion in its world and characters? (like say, mushoku tensei?) i've always held off on trying it because from the nature of the concept i thought it would've been written with some pretentious japanese, but after glancing at the first volume it seems normal.
>>49601693 (OP)How much do I have to read to be able to understand the 学園キノ spinoff?
>>49708362I haven't read that one specifically, but キノの旅 has pretty simple language for the most part so I wouldn't expect the spinoff to be much different.
Any podcast or YouTube channel that talks about unadapted LNs?
>>49716175>westoids>reading
>>49716217What did the post that you think you read say?
>>49708362I'd say just follow the release order. The first 学園キノ volume was released after volume 9 of キノの旅. The author will probably mention it in the あとがき.

I just found out that kimirano was shut down, which I find very sad and resulted in my list of books I wanted to read getting nuked. Thankfully, I was smart enough to make a backup, but it wasn't complete.
I won't forget you, 華恋.

Which of the newer FF games stories feel like LNs/VNs? I want to see what nu-gaming has to offer but I want the experience to be on the same level as our medium.
>>4973820114 ARR to EW is probably the closest and the game feels like a VN most of the time
15 is a roadtrip with the bros but the game sucks
16 is game of thrones
>>49739277>14That's nice to hear, I was already interested in it. What's the best way to experience it as a VN? Self-insert cool protagonist with black hair or cute girl is fine too? I wanted to make a gun girl and cosplay as Kino-chan.
>16You mean it's hollywood tier writing or just western medieval and edgy but still LN?
Also what about FF7 remake? If it's like a VN should I play it or the original first? I like the art but don't know if the remake writing is LN/VN tier.

welp, this thread seems to be on it's deathbed
i'm one of those guys that kept necrobumping it when it hit page 9-10 but i'm tired

just remove the spaces and change the , for a .
also if moe is down, there's an alt domain on , se

wish you the best guys, hope you lurkers at least move to lurk there, as both the /a/ isekai general and the /jp/ general seem fairly active now, even the biweekly new releases are getting posted there now
>>49748609>IDs farming +rep points, effectively turning it into レディットGive me an actual reason to use that slop.
>>49748609Thanks, that explains why this place has been so dead since the downtime, I thought all of you fags fell to the pisscord virus.
See you over there guys.
>>49749371I don't see any rep points tho.
>>49748609Highly doubt I'll go there but I appreciate your service regardless. admittedly I haven't really read anything lately so there's not much to talk about from my end.
I have a feeling that LNs converge too heavily on a limited number of tropes like isekai, gaming mechanics, hero party/maou and such though I admit the possibility of my sample not being fully representative.
What have you read that makes you go "now that's fresh", "now that's a writer than does more than a bare minimum of creative output"?
>>49756020>isekai, gaming mechanics, hero party/maouYou can literally just not read those. I typically don't. There's dozens of LNs that come out every month that have nothing to do with those topics.
>>49756048Eyeroll. Point conceded, now what *you* find interesting/original?
>>49756106If you want recommendations, why don't you simply ask in a non-inflammatory manner and give specifics about what kinds of stories you're looking for?
>>49756117Forget I was asking (at least you) anything.
I sense that if I failed to get it across already further exchanges will make it worse instead of better.
>>49756132 (me)
on reflection, this sounded even more inflammatory. no helping it i guess
>>49756020Believe it or not all the big names you've heard of do characteristic things that make them stand out (Honzuki, nanaken, Konosuba, Overlord, Mushoku, Sword Art Online, etc.) and many more obscure ones do too.
I'll recommend 緋弾のアリア and 水属性の魔法使い
Just download and try out something if it looks neat, don't worry about tropes or the lack thereof. The characters are way more important. You can completely rip off another story's premise and concept but different characters always make things play out differently. And if you're not interested after a couple chapters just drop it and on to the next thing. In the age of infinite choices something important to really enjoying stuff is to not be picky and give stuff a chance but also know there's no need to worry about trying to appreciate something that isn't grabbing you at first, because there's so many things you can just keep skipping over until you find the thing that really does it for you.
>>49756190I don't entirely agree, but I appreciate the effortful response
>緋弾のアリア and 水属性の魔法使いI'll check those out
>>49756020Read Baccano and Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere.
>>49756020>What have you read that makes you go "now that's fresh"i don't read stuff to have the "monkey with shiny object" effect, grow up
>>49756383I'll check it out
>>49756436I don't have crippling autism, so I can't engage in identical rote activity for years on end without going insane.
>>49756020>>49756221>>49756472Just go read MT and honzuki like the rest of the goyim and call it a day.
>>49756020You can try はじめてのゾンビ生活, ほうかごがかり or 冬にそむく
>>49756020So true. We need to make LNs for a global innovative audience. I read the translations about a yuusha and his friends and its sounds like... so slop? Isekai in general is just "low hanging fruit the genre", am I right? SAO was when LNs got on a wrong track, science says.
>>49756221Facts don't care about your feeling lil' bro. Give arguments. You guys say Japanese otaku can't into logic or understanding real people but the display here is pathetic.
>I don't entirely agree
>>49757303SAO was when ln's just returned to their origins as fantasy fast food slop, regressed toward the mean, nothing more.
>>49757386So much true. SAO got me so angry when watching it. Like... a gamer guy gets a stereotypical yamato nadeshiko girl (yeah, I know the term) but this time she has orange/blonde hair. I know it shouldn't be like that. Kirito makes me unironically seethe at otaku writing. They act unrealistic, even in the subbed version. They should act more like normal humans, I don't understand why they act like that. I know I should be Kirito, not him.
>>49756020Is this considered off-topic to bring up "real" Jp literature here?
I'm not nearly ready to give up on hover dictionaries yet, but I'm getting comfortable with reading LNs and it's an open secret that nearly any book with anime character on the cover is at best equivalent of Western YA fiction.
I want to broaden my horizons. I read some classics like Dazai and Mishima in translation years ago, Murakami, and that's about it
>>49757436>and it's an open secret that nearly any book with anime character on the cover is at best equivalent of Western YA fiction.ironically enough "real literature" has far simpler japanese than the average LN
if you can read LNs then you can probably read "real books" straight up without hover dictionaries aside from maybe names
>>49757447May be debatable overall but this is certainly true when it comes to vocabulary specifically
>>49757447Don't tell irony weebs that LNs and VNs have pushed literature further and they are unironically not intelligent enough to understand that because of social good boy point allegiances to appearing safe and sophisticated.
>The only activity this thread has these days is some normalnigger baiting with ye olde muh YA. arguments.
>Not even sperging out over translators anymore.
That's just sad.
>>49757476The YA post is otaku false flagging as "normalgroids". The original normalgroid post is
>>49756020 that people took seriously.
>standard rec post, but slightly dismissive towards isekai and mmorpg fantasy genre

>>49757593>dismissive towards isekai and mmorpg fantasy genreTruly, I wonder why people who love the medium feel angry at people dismissing it and yet still asking to be engaged in it. We're not retarded, we've seen this a hundred times already and know what "le isekai tropes bad" is code for.
>>49757593>"""slightly""" dismissive>now that's a writer than does more than a bare minimum of creative output>implying this is rareAnti-Japan attack.
>>49757694>and know what "le isekai tropes bad" is code for.Honestly that kind of shit was far smarter on the 10s, especially with the proliferation of LE MANIME stuf ans nonstop shitting on SAO for no reason.
On these 20s it's just jeets spamming the same scripts.
>>49757694>>49757694>You must like the same things I like or you are a normalfaggot and irony weeb who dismisses the entire medium! Better don't push me or I'll come up with more mean words to call you!lil bro......
