I had a similar experience with a more homely gravure idol that's been around for a good while and doesn't seem to have much traction, struggling with those events where you need a bunch of likes/faves on social media to be featured and stuff, it's kind of sad not being able to support her fully.

How stupid are you? The appeal of gravure is the natural beauty of the models, the pure feminine air. There is nothing attractive about tattoos or what they say about the mental state/personality of the person they're on. Goes double for women. Especially Japanese women, where they aren't just following a trend since tattoos are thankfully rare over there.

Unironically, gravure is drying up as we speak. Lots of new models enter every week, but in a weird inverse of the AKB boom days, they're debuting in entertainment as gradols, but aiming for another idol career, music or acting. In the same way, the organic rise of women wanting to do gravure professionally for real is nonexistent, who we do get are from the large scale photo session circuits and then they maybe get into a magazine. But the issue is that magazines are mostly impenetrable if you aren't on a major agency or in an idol unit, so girls like ie Hazaki Ayu get confined to DVD and live photoshoot sales, without the mag coverage to help until they're already veterans. Actually, the rise of personal photoshoots and other live events for photographer-fans mirrors the underground idol scene, so in that way modern grav has two functional scenes (IV girls and magazine girls) but it's just increasingly niche. Thus the most notorious gravure -only talents will be the fringe/fetish appeals signed to huge agencies and that's why they get on TV while jewels like Nagasawa Marina, Takasaki Kanami, Hanasaki Fuka, Hazaki Ayu, etc etc get no exposure beyond their wota.
