I don't go to /tg/ so I don't know how great of an overlap there actually is, but they are at least somewhat similar in a few ways. They are both fairly large series which blend magic and science, have a lot of references to culture and history, and their tone varies quite a bit.
In essence, both Touhou and 40k are prisms that you can look at and discuss any number of subjects thru, this board is a testament to that, at least on the Touhou side.

WH40K is the closet you can get of a western Touhou Project.
Fans are incredibly dedicated and passionate to the setting and make a lot of content for the community like Emps TTS, memes and Astartes. The world building of WH40K potential is immense because you have a whole fucking galaxy! You can make your dudes, your stories and somehow it would fit! Like the Angry Marines. You can even justify inconsistencies and even flip off canon thanks to The Warp! Power scalers get totally fucked because it's works similarly like Touhou, it is just pro-wrestling like. But WH40K fans are more way hardcore and won't hesitate to say it's shit and burn GW to the ground if they mess a little too much with the setting.

Suwako is a curse god, able to weaken her rivals without doing much directly. The Death Guard can use ailments to crush the opossing army without attacking them directly. She could feel the familiarity there.

Froggy can be very macabre and intimidating when she drops the happy go lucky attitude, and the DG have that gory and crude aesthetic that makes them very menacing

Furthermore, Suwako and their patron god, Nurgle, aren't very unlike to each other. Both are feared for their curses, but also have a softer side, being related to harvests and fertility too. Nurgle also has sided many times with Khorne, the chaos god of war (they are still enemies, its just that they hate each other much less than they hate the other two), which adds another strange paralellism with Suwako siding with Kanako. Also, Nurgle has toad daemons, another connection there

All of these familiarities would make her pick them as their go-to army, I believe

on that, i give you this; before entering gensokyo, suwako had embraced the notion that she was going to die, not even her descendant knowing her,and nurgle is all about acepting the inevitable. yet, nurgle is also about pushing on no matter what, and suwako finds herself wanting to have one last dance at gensokyo, despite everything. death guard does fit suwako perfectly
