The human villagers are saints on average and you'll basically become a overnight celebrity by staying. Parents will be lining up to marry off their daughters, rich merchants will be asking you to stay over and tell them about the outside world, store owners will be asking for your autograph.

Also, if you are less scrupulous, their saint like nature means you can fleece them for all they are worth. Your third grade American used cars salesman is pretty much a trickster god compared to your average well meaning villager.

Sure, the life of an 18th-century Japanese peasant is hard, but it's peaceful and quiet there, the air is clear, the people are much nicer and more pleasant than the people living in modern society, you're safe if you stay in the village, you can maybe learn some magic, and there are cute girls everywhere you look

What's not to like? I wouldn't really want to live there myself, personally, because I have dreams that can only be fulfilled in the outside world, but for a person who likes that kind of life, it's paradise

Really just proves that some basic defense is all you need. The youkai you're going to be afraid of are nameless weaker ones that will take the chance to eat you for a leg up, like most beast youkai.
