Has HiNative ever made its way into the conversation here?
It’s a bit like Quora but for language learning. They have an option to have native speakers correct your writing but it’s only for paid members.
You can still ask for corrections if you use a “blank” template. Lots of people do this.
Getting native feedback on your writing is very useful for learning.
It’s probably good to clarify whether you are aiming for colloquial/casual, formal, or neutral, especially when having your Japanese looked at. It can determine the way people steer you when they give corrections/advice.

Without any other input, your Japanese will forever be missing some key vocabulary for formal speech that just isn’t going to come up in Bleach but that you would use with some frequency in the real world.
On the same trajectory, you would possibly be fluent after like 15 years, but would still be severely challenged if required to do things like pass a job interview.
You wouldn’t fit into society because you aren’t able to speak with the class of a normal grown adult. Anime alone will never equip you for that.

It’s VERY true that your output will never be natural without a lot of input, but it will also not reach its full potential without actual speaking practice.
>>49804603your speaking ability can never be more than a tiny fraction of your comprehension ability because you can only output a subset of your input ability and the first step would be to increase your input ability, you should be AT LEAST n1 level and comfortably read light novels before trying to output but yeah after that it's practice, you obviously won't get good at speaking if you never do it (like me) but setting up the foundation is also important

>>49804650no, they wouldn't even pass n4 since the can't read kanji
>>49804650To clarify, N2 is grammatically on par with what a native-speaking kid can do.
The vocab required to take you to N1 is vocab that most native Japanese speakers learn in high school and above.
Perfect comprehension at an N2 level would suffice in order to talk at something approximating the level of a kid.
You can complete a 4-year university program majoring in Japanese as a foreign language, and know all the grammar you need, and they say that prepares you for N3.
By no means is N1 the “base level”.
>>49804696true
natives avoid learning n1 words until hs despite them being in almost all types of media for all ages
>>49804700Eh, depends on the word.
And honestly, if you watch all kinds of media for all ages too, you’ll also pick up vocab that technically counts as N1 at a fairly early stage, if you aren’t shying away from committing new words to memory that aren’t relevant for the next JLPT you’re going to take.
>>49804584my foot struggles through your ass
Also, remember how you learned your own native language.
It’s very unlikely that you learned very many words from hearing them just once, even at the age of immense neuroplasticity that was your first couple of years.
You heard all of them multiple times… *in multiple contexts*. That is the main key. The words you hear in Bleach will stick with you better if you also hear them in another series, or better yet, in a drama or a news segment.
yeah theres no way a syougakusei knows all n1 words unko retarded as usual
>>49804714my point is tons of kids younger than highschoolers can easily pass the n1

>>49804748If we’re talking about the listening section of N1, then yes. You are correct. Most elementary school kids would probably get a passing score.
I feel like someone who aced the hell out of all sections of N2 would also be likely to pass the listening section of N1, though.
Especially given that we just said kids have enough vocab to pass the N1 listening section, I doubt that anyone with a super-solid N2 vocab would crash and burn on it.
Vocab recognition at N2 level, listening comprehension at N1 level. I think that’s what we can conclude would be on par with a native-speaking child.

>>49804827>Vocab recognition at N2 level, listening comprehension at N1 levelIn terms of reading-qua-reading you're right (an elementary schooler would struggle with all the kanji) but in terms of vocabulary itself this claim is crazy, a native 10-year-old is way beyond N1
This sounds like the sort of horseshit from people who believe the average adult knows less than 10k lemmas in their native language (the actual figure is 30-50k)
>>49804877I guess I thought that achievement was more impressive than it really is. It’s hard to compare my ability now to what it was 12 years ago when I got N1. There have been no milestones where I went “Ha! That’s not something I could have done in 2013!”… but I’m probably a bit conceited and tend to overestimate what I was capable of in the past.
I do hear about Chinese people passing N1 because of kanji being intuitive to them but then not actually being able to speak for shit. So I see your point.
Reconsidering my stance on this one for sure.
do they have full knowledge of n1 vocabulary? no, so they are not "way beyond n1." simple
>>49804954The tripfag is right, I passed N1 2 years ago and the average shitty middle school brat probably knows anywhere from 10-20k words more than the average N1 passer, who I assume would know about 15k or so. I definitely didn't have more than 20k when I passed it.
>>49804964still its kinda like when someone like quiz and matt ankis some words the average native cant read and thinks that alone makes them beyond native
>>49804971yes it is exactly like that
>>49804954You passed the N1 12 years ago but you're still in DJT? What went wrong?
when i say anything regarding comparing myself to natives i word myself pretty specifically but i guess you can't avoid malicious people from purposefully misunderstanding
but i'll rephrase what i usually say which is that i'm better at KANJI READING than the AVERAGE native speaker
which means i am not better to speaking or writing or really anything else than a native speaker and that in the pool of native speakers there exist thousands of people better than me at kanji readings
its kinda like when japanese kids know words not tested on the n1 and some people think that makes them beyond n1
its kinda like when i have no idea what im talking about and that makes me think im beyond n1

The English “n” is also read differently depending on phonetic context. We don’t say it the “normal” way in words like “think”.
Granted, my statement was oversimplified, but my point was that at the end of an utterance or before a vowel, you hear it in its default form, which is that French-sounding nasalization.
Most English speakers never have that pointed out to them, and go for years without losing that part of their accent.

not to derail the japanese thread, but exactly how important are tones and pitch in chinese? i saw a video saying theres like 1200 pronunciation variations or some shit and i can't believe something with that much complexity and nuance would make or break somebody understanding you when you talk.
as an aside, the grammar though seems way more straightforward compared to japanese though when i was doing the comparisons in gpt.
>>49807016Pretty important, but from what I heard you can just magically get used to distinguishing them if you just listen a lot, and people can mostly tell what you're saying through context even if you butcher them
The grammar is more straightforward, yes

idk about this usagispoon kanji phonetics deck. lots of kanji elements I'd be able to read inside of a word/full kanji that I can't read in isolation. maybe that means I should learn to read them in isolation, or maybe it means that isolated study is once again not worth it. then again, a japanese person can look at an isolated kanji and tell you an onyomi. it's only a hundred or so cards so whatever.
