WAI does on occasion yield a correct-ish impression with "komano_aunn_(komainu)," but it tends toward a chibified form and is nowhere near reliable. Once there's enough of a suggestion via doodle (horns, ears, curls) a low-ish denoise inpaint + character and feature tags turns the trick. Then again, that's true of pretty well anything.

I feel like "favourite Touhous" can be a roulette wheel, sometimes there's some reasoning why this random character is among your favorites (for example I like Lily White entirely because my birthday lines up with the first day of Spring) but most of the time its just "I like their character concept that was vaguely outlined" or their design. This case its the character concept of small "feral god" (term used in SoPM) along with the whole leaf painter thing. I find it pretty fascinating where the line is drawn between gods and youkai and how gods can become youkai and youkai can become gods both in real Japanese mythology and also in Touhou (funny thing is Kogasa used to be a god, all tsukumogami are. They're the abandoned gods turned into youkai, in other words should Reimu get desperate enough she could snag Kogasa or Medicine and make one of them her god)

I will say the aforementioned scheduling issues is just an 11-hour job. There's a really good chance I will miss the announcement myself and forget to mention it. (I'm in the process of finding a new job to switch to)

Not sure if you meant that in a negative light or not... either way I feel obliged to defend my case, coincidentaly this same topic sort of came up a while ago on the Rika thread and I explained my reasoning there. I'll admit it's a bit of the two first things you mentioned (concept and design) since I have a massive thing for brunettes and braids, but there's a lot more to it, even though it might just be me looking into stuff too deeply. One thing I really like about "blank slate" characters like this because they leave a lot of room for interpretation and discussion with other anons. My Rika and yours could vary a lot and even add to eachother's headcanons. That happened in the last Rika thread with another anon I talked with.

Maybe! Some might be a little too hard to gen... that idea you explain afterwards definitely falls into that category, I would say, but anything is possible if you're dedicated and patient enough.

I actually almost had to scrap this idea early on because I was reminded that true touhou ghosts are indistinguishable from humans for body temperature and it's actually the phantoms/spirits that give off the cold air. But I just cheesed it by figuring that the spirits that tend to swirl around Yuyuko would probably act as mini-coolers or something.

fun tip: if you have trouble trying to nail a certain angle or pose down, img2img helps, but also consider the ever-helpful garry's mod for setting things up as the img2img starting point.

fun tip: img2img is a great tool, but if you don't want to bother trying to search google or elsewhere for a specific launch image, you can rely on good ol' Garry's mod to create the specific angle and pose and screenshot that and shove it in for the starting point.

So the AC was just letting the model throw a bunch of generic room images with the [air_conditioner] tag and then cropping out the best looking one in GIMP and collaging it in.

the 3Koma format I actually found a neat little tool online that would let you randomly generate manga page layouts and customize variables with it. Just search "Manga layout generator" on your favorite search engine.

So I used it to spitball the layout and then adjust it to better fit the images when I settled on one.

Past that, it was just using GIMP to collage everything, shoving it into img2img and upscaling at medium denoise to normalize everything and then manually inpainting for the finer details like thermostat, thought/speech bubbles, and icons.

ended up being a schizo post since I ended up creating a duplicate final version because I thought I saw a detail get reverted. (the see-through shirt on the second panel)

but it turned out that it was just my primary monitor's color scheme messing with me and it was fine all along so I just kept it as-is and reuploaded since I already deleted the old post.
