Wow. Maybe I am easily impressed. But this was good enough to make me sit back and stare at the ceiling at the end for maybe 5 minutes and think "I'm glad I bothered learning Japanese". I'm definitely going to have to replay this, maybe yearly. I enjoyed it a lot, much more than I expected going into it. Fucking phenomenal. I can't remember the last time I have been so moved by any literature. Must be at least 2-3 years at least and I'd struggle to think of what it was.

I think it definitely hits its stride in 二周目 with 一周目 being sort of an extended prologue. The game in which TS included an easy mode was Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo. For Kuon no Kanata, TS added a hard mode after realizing that several streamers thought it was too easy. I haven't played Kuon no Kanata yet, so I don't know if its hard mode is as unbalanced as Shinsetsu's easy mode.

Haven't read VNs for a while, but decided to read Sakura no Toki.
It wasn't bad or anything, but kinda disappointed.
Way too little focus on Rina and Rin. I don't even understand their thought process in trying to be a rival/obstacle to overcome for Naoya while also leaving him alone. Kei was Naoya's rival because he actually interacted with him and told him that straight to his face. Also that whole ending sequence starting from the weird paint battles felt rushed and a lot of characters felt underused. The whole art club had 0 presence other than Nei.
Also a lot of the art philosophy felt heavy handed because they keep repeating the same thing, like I get it. Housai only ever references that bald mountain story with every character he talks to.

Misuzu was cute though.

I played kuokana on release so there was no hardmode, and I also thought it was extremely easy compared to mahosho, but I also thought hard mode would not fix the issue, because what made mahosho interesting was the fact that there was limited EXP to gain, so you could not become too OP and you'd always have just enough MP to kill elite units(even if you purposefully waited for nests to pop to kill extra colored units inside it, normal objectives would become ez but repeatedly waiting for each nest to pop and see what comes out of it still required thought and strategy).
However in kuokana there's a feature that if you die and get game over, you repeat but get to keep all your exp, 敗北しても経験値そのまま資金増加状態でやり直せます which is also part of the story so I don't think he's remove it for hardmode, or I can't see it in the patchnotes I'm reading right now, so it's impossible for it to be challenging in the same way mahosho was, unless you self-impose some rules for yourself. I'm still curious how hardmode feels, so I'm gonna download and play when I have time, I was a bit dissapointed in kuokana gameplay after mahosho because I just facerolled every mission, but I liked it's characters and story more...

Now that I think about it more, Sakura no Uta was much better constructed as a whole too.
The available route order slowly reveals layers of info and gradually gets more fantastic.
Rin - why Naoya can't use arm
Makoto - IIRC a bunch of background info on the Nakamura and Toritani family.
Rina - background info on Hakui and the power of the thousand year old sakura tree
Shizuku - truth of Rin's accident and Sui's identity.
True - compete with the physical manifestation of Rin's godly talent. Rin also achieves God form through fusion with Sui offscreen. (what the fuck man Sui was my favorite character)

Sakura no Toki on the other hand had that weird first chapter with Shizuru that only exists to show that a special pottery glaze exists and to set up for Makoto route, that second chapter where they make fliers, that Misuzu route where I honestly don't remember anything other than freaky sex and the dad lending big bucks on counterfeit collateral, and that Makoto route where Shizuru makes up with Reika. They just don't really build up for the true route where Naoya uses magical paint and magical dream water.
