during the great depression remingshit went bankrupt and was sold to the og gun powder company and chemical company DuPont (a similar thing happened to winchester/UMC which got sold to chemical company olin)
during WWII the government built a bunch of ammo factories for DuPont to operate and make ammo in and had Remington produce 1903A3 springfields (remington produced over 1 million 1903 springfields during WWII and for some reason serial number info is on the national parks site https://www.nps.gov/spar/learn/historyculture/u-s-springfield-model-1903-production.htm)
anyway post sale/WWII remington decided they wanted to simplify production by having a bunch of guns that used the same parts based on the 870 so they could undercut winchester and the other hunting guns makers.
To that effect they made the 870, the 1100 semi auto shotgun (which wiki says by 1983 had the highest sales for any shotgun based on dollar amount made, but it might not be inflation adjustment, I didn't read), the model 740 semi auto rifle and model 760 pump action rifle.
the 740 is the same gun as the 760, just with a very yurp, replace the gas system with the 870 pump system
>why pump action at alldon't have to take your trigger hand off the trigger and doesn't fuck your sight picture much so it's the fastest action style other than semi auto and it's easy to convert semis to pumps because you are just replacing the gas system with the pump and otherwise keeping the bolt system the same
>why PAPA is one of 2 states to specifically ban semi auto rifles for hunting. PA also has very dense woods and corn fields so guys don't shoot much father than 100 yards. the 760 gives you a fast follow up shot, isn't semi auto and is in .30-06 government for surplus and autism reasons. .30-30 lever guns were popular too for similar reasons, though .30-06 autism and later bolt actions won.
