Can we have a /k/ video game thread?

>>63810200 (OP)Ok, so are these threads lately the work of a troll? Why is it always games that clearly aren't /k/? Battlefield last time, CoD this time? How come people don't talk about Stalker anymore? We have Stalker 2 now. There have been dedicated Stalker threads with tons of mod lists on /k/ for over a decade, and in 2025, there's threads about fucking Call of Duty 2?
Wtf happened?
I was really in the mood for an fps yesterday, but every single fucking game is 100gb+ nowadays.
>>63810303Because STALKER 2 sucks. Unoptimized UE5 garbage that has even less features and polish than a 15 year old X-ray engine game
>>63810455Thereโs a black dude named Swedish in the game and itโs funny.
>>63810455He's not wrong. Stalker 2 fell into the trap of relying too heavily on UE5 gimmicks and it looks like absolute shit as a result. Just try turning off any of the temporal bullshit or upscaling and look at how the game turns into a blurry, pixelated mess. Game somehow manages to look like shit on low and high settings outside of cherrypicked images with zero movement.
If you want stalker 2, just play something like Radiophobia.
>>63810455I would've loved for it to be good but unfortunately, it's shit.
also, the remaster of 1 is also shit
they should've never removed the Soviet stuff or the russian language voice overs. I get why they did it but it just makes a game that is ALL about soul into some soulless piece of shit.

Not sure if itโs /k/ but this is my all time favorite. Donโt even have a ps2 at the moment, but Iโm glad I have a copy of this. Itโs dated, and the gameplay is very linear compared to my other favorite games, but I thought the story was so unique and compelling that it stands alone. Wasnโt even being an edgelord, just thought the plot and setting were that special.
>>63810212I gave it a go. It was extremely Boomerific although picking up people to use as a wrecking ball was fun.
>>63810283It doesn't need appreciation as its in our hearts at all times.

>removal of the soviet stuffUnecessary.
>>63810490>A-lifeit doesn't have a-life. It just spawns random bandits around you. There is ZERO persistent system in STALKER 2

>>63810495>If GSC makes another stalker game, they should use their own engineThese days it's almost impossible, hence even CDPR is moving away from the in-house engine to UE. The reality of things is that a bespoke engine fucks up with production too much: you can't hire people on the market who know how to work in your bespoke stuff, you can't use the astronomical amounts of knowledge which exists for a popular engine, you can't have all the integrations and additional tools that exist for a popular engine and so on and so forth. Nobody cares that UE is "bad", people use it because there are good tools for making games using that engine, there are guides, lessons, integrations, etc.

>>63810912Another anon here, Stalker 2 is so shit, the game soft locked at least 6 different times on different quests, not even mentioning the numerous other bugs resulting in the game being impossible to complete. It really is the biggest disappointment in gaming like 20 years.
>>63810931Sounds just like the original trilogy desu
I put 20 hours into vanilla Call of Pripyat a few years ago and had to restart from hard locks twice
I think most gamers think about stalker in terms of anomaly where it's modded and patched
>>63810931why does it feel like every game in the past 15 years has just been a graphical update without actually adding anything new? Especially lately, everything that's coming out feels unfinished, full of bugs and problems on release, and often has less in depth content than games of the past. Or is just a straight up re-release
>>63810959Normies immediately buy the new 2k/fifa every single fucking year without a single synapse firing between their goddamn monkey ears and money grubbing accountants realized they can just cash in the same way with every genre of video game.
>>63810931>Stalker 2 is so shit, the game soft locked at least 6 different times on different questsSounds like bullshit, I did a single play through in about 120 hours (i.e. I didn't just run through the story, but spent quite some time in the game) from day one of release. Didn't have a single soft lock, didn't have a single game breaking bug. The only partially bugged quest in the game was saving Zalissya, i.e. if you fast travel there - it's fucked and all that. Just reloaded and walked there on foot and it was okay. Literally no other issues at all, outside pretty retarded mutant spawns.
Compared to many other releases in the last 5+ years this is almost exemplary.
>>63810303Whatโs wrong with Battlefield? I only play 1 down didnโt really touch V or 2043
>>63811006I love Battlefield 1 but really, it's more like a good CoD game than a BF game. It's so fast.

>>63811108Gunner, HEAT, PC! is coming along quite nicely at the moment. It's still early access so some things are a bit rough around the edges, but as far as tank gunnery goes, it's great. Latest patch expanded the available FRG vehicles with the Marder IFV.

>>63811006>>63811008They're great games, don't get me wrong. I love Battlefield 1 and even enjoy 5. But they're fantasy games in a world war setting. They're simply not /k/.

>>63811129How's the replayability? That's largely my main concern as I fear I might just complete all the missions and then the only thing left for me to do will be waiting for new missions to be released.
>>63811180Same, but just taking off from the destroyer at the beginning was the best thing I'd ever seen in a game, it blew my tiny little mind.

>>63810303>>63811143Just lost this whole post so rewriting it.
Been considering a /k/ games tier list. Quality of game wouldn't be the focus, rather how much the game fits with /k/
>Negative TierGames which should be considered anti-/k/, through awful representation or any other means. Example: Modern cancerous CoD
>Null TierNeither /k/ nor anti-/k/, these games simply aren't near enough to being /k/ to be qualified higher. Example: Mass Effect, Doom, most non-weapons games
>Intro Tier/k/ subject matter, but often in a casual manner. Most earlier CoDs would fall under this banner
>Operator TierOur first true /k/ ranking, games are probably considered highly detailed or realistic to normies. Examples: Wargame series, ARMA series
>/k/ultureAt this point the tier list splits, as both this and the final are equal but seperate - games in this tier have a significant following, even if they might otherwise fall lower on the chart. Example: STALKER
>Autisti/k/Full blown autism. Example: Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations
Does this seem like a decent system or does it need more/less tiers?
>>63811521NTA but this seems like a very cool standardization to me. I support the idea.
Regarding BF1, it would probably land in the nu-/k/ tier.
>Bad company 2
we were doing FPV drone strikes on mission critical objectives 16 years before it was cool
shit was so effective they had to nerf it out of the game
>>63811521Not a bad idea, pretty sure we did have lists like that in the past. /k/ vidya threads used to have a lot of stuff, if you wanted to know the best mods to make Stalker as realistic as possible, you could just follow a list from the thread.
>>63811187Replayability is pretty good, honestly. After the mission is done, you can change the vehicles or equipment of at least the most important formations in the mission and also change the time of day for it. The missions have some degree of randomness in the built-in, as well. You won't find mobile formations in the same locations on reruns, but entrenched or strictly defending ones will be in the same area every time, with only little variation. But it will be an entirely different matter to assault a position manned by APCs and T-55s than missile carrying IFVs & T-80s.
If you are interested in tank gunnery and dicking around in armoured vehicles in the Fulda Gap, it's a good buy.
>>63810571>I didn't last long. The AI respawning was so egregious when I played. Leaving LoS would have entire groups immediately respawn.A bug they fixed a couple 100GB (no joke) updates ago. It's not OG A-life but it does a decent job emulating encounters.
>>63811134The sequel to the most famous slav jank games is janky oh no could've seen that one coming. The bugs aren't the biggest problem but the fucking performance.
You either play with low settings but the game looks worse than vanilla SoC but it's playable or you play on higher settings where it looks great but runs like shit. And also better mod support would be great
>>63811521Looks very good. We need to have this in the next /k/ vidya thread.

Hot take: but Cyberpunk 2077 when correctly modded can be extremely /k/
>urban mercenary operations, need to be extremely tactical and plan out engagements because you are always outnumbered and outgunned
>slowed pace, extremely deadly weapons, and almost no health make positioning and initiative paramount
>leverage stealth, surprise, and force of violence to accomplish objectives before QRFs arrive
>obtaining premium gear actually feels like it makes an incredible difference, and makes you appreciate it better
basically Kruger simulator
>>63811903Mind giving a few mod suggestions? Maybe I'm just shit at finding good mods, but no matter how much I modded CP2077, it always felt like the same easy trash to me, even on the hardest difficulty levels.
>>63811903>turn off HUD>decrease carried ammo>no fast travel or minimap>damage normalized by weapon caliber>health normalized to 100hp for most NPCs, means anyone (including you) can quickly be taken down by even the starting machine pistol >hacking revamp incentivizes stealth>AI revamp makes NPCs extremely dangerous team players (almost like F.E.A.R. level at some points)>drones are extremely tough and very difficult to take down through conventional means>enemies (and security systems) gain ability to dynamically call in reinforcements>claustrophobic escalating conflicts in tight packed favelas>or long range combat in desert wastes incentivizing both stealth and speed>random gang wars spill over the streets and become erupting conflict zones involving multiple gangs, police, corporate security, and conceal carry civilians >not disguising yourself during missions makes gangs aware of you, and aggro on the streetit's actually incredible once you tweak it enough
>>63811935hard to go wrong with
>no HUD (must have, makes you actually pay attention to environmental cues, of which there are many in this game)>Hardcore 22 (normalizes all human health)>stealthrunner>damage by caliber (forget the actual name of this)>weight normalization mod (makes ammo actually weigh something, plus can only really carry a primary and secondary arm)>reinforcements mod + enemies remember you + night city alive (massively increases the dynamicity of both missions and the open world)>hidden gems map (directed exploration, has you go to so many obscure and detailed locations)>stock and news mod (short a corpo stock right before you blow up their factory lol)anything on the gameplay tab of nexus is a good start. whole bunch on there, main issue is making them work together.

The game needs a dedicated, open community to work, otherwise it would be completely unplayable. More than any other game i can think of. And i absolutely love how it just works. >>63810303>>63811496Shut up, boring mil-sims don't need to be the benchmark. I asked this question myself and the answer really wasn't as black and white as you suggest it is. There's a reason the bulk of shooters out there are action oriented, because that's the part that's actually fun. Trying to emulate the real life of a real soldier isn't fun because being in the military is fucking boring. All that matters is that the weapons are accurate enough and sound cool enough, plenty of arcade/casual games can be considered /k/ otherwise what can be considered a "/k/ vidya" is a lame ass selection
I'm more a modern naval fag, so I play Harpoon and its derivatives. (Jane's Fleet Command and Sea Power are nice, but I prefer the fidelity of Harpoon more.) I play Highfleet and Nebulous: Fleet Command when I feel like science fiction naval stuff.
I used to play Harpoon on the board quite a bit when I was a skimmer.
>>63811292Which beta? The last one introduced weird changes, like increased map sizes which made gameplay very different. But supposedly that's been changed once again and maps are now smaller so players are not thinly spread around the whole map.
Overall the game was great and it actually felt like a proper successor to Wargame, which is weird, because Eugen still exist and they made Warno that is some weird mix of Wargame and SD2, but it offers nothing new.

>>63814515I want very few things more than a proper sequel for Generals+ZH. Same mechanics but more content and capabilities with modern graphics. Chances of that happening are near zero... at least there's some pretty good mods out there these days.
>>63814750all features are working, all maps are playable, the reason nobody's playing is clearly not that the devs dropped it. it's that there's no demand.
>>63814840Didn't help that Tripwire basically pissed and chased off a good chunk of their playerbase with their attitude and decisions.
>>63814799Its kind of impressive that so many people keep trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to RTS but nobody is able to remake the same magic Generals had.
Everything about it was just right. The pacing was spot on, the mechanics fantastic, factions diverse and interesting. Plus it had a relatively easy to learn and use map editor.
>>63814923I think it's that desire to "reinvent the wheel" as you put it that keeps fucking them. It's why C&C 4 was such a steaming pile of shit in my opinion. Meanwhile Generals still has a strong loyal player base even 20 years post release. I feel like developers feel pressured to change things up radically or else nobody will buy it, but that just ends up with a high risk of alienating the already present core audience.
The basic framework Generals had is sturdy and has lots of room for expansion and customization, the problem is they keep deciding to try and build a whole new house instead.
>>63814314RO1 was the best one but it's dead as fuck. Sad.
>>63814469>Any good tactical games? The only games that ever scratched that itch for me were Close Combat 2 and Sid Meier's Gettysburg. Everything else is too autistic or just a puzzle game dressed up in a military theme. You could play some of the other Close Combat games and the mods people have made for them. Also you remind me, I fire up Take Command: 2nd Manassas sometimes, and it's old and clunky but scratches a similar itch.
I've been meaning to try the Field of Glory games.
>>63815701When I saw the thumbnail of the screenshot it made me think I was looking at a fight between football hooligans (like they had invaded the pitch and started a mass brawl with each other)
That would be a cool concept for a RTS game.
Hell it would be a fun idea for a parody of a Fire Emblem game, with your crew getting involved in punch ups on the way to the world cup and deaths being permanent with the crew members either get killed or arrested etc when falling in battle.
>>63812065Yeah and he gets ACK'd like the proper VDV he is. 100% accurate storytelling.
>>63811566It was always a crap shoot if you'd get ganked when you were on the UAV station in BC2. We quite literally did invent FPV drones in BF3 however, even after they nerfed them people still used them and they behaved more true to life as well, blowing up after impact with a soldier. The true blue days of MAV abuse were when you could ram them into multiple people at once and when you could put a brick of c4 on them to get at pesky snipers, not sure if they ever actually nerfed the c4 thing though.
>>63810495no, stalker 2 is a super mid game held up by reused assets.
>>63810534>you can't hire people on the market who know how to work in your bespoke stuffwouldn't be a problem if devs didn't treat their staff like disposable worker drones to be used and dumped once they're done shitting out a barely finished and totally unoptimized product in order to appease shareholders before the next quarterly report
>>63816492it's a job simulator full of troons pretending to be generals

>>63810200 (OP)I'm very tired of companies slapping bullshit eula permissions on older games. can't even play brothers in arms without them sticking their those nose in my shit.
Thoughts on Splinter Cell
I have RO2 and RS2, but I could never get into either. I never experienced any decent team play outside of the Green Army Men game mode and most matches are just one side or the other rushing the objective. I wish I could find more enjoyment in them, but I'm missing something.
The last modern shooter I played was Easy Red 2. It was kind of fun but its half finished and the AI can be outsmarted by a glass of water. I cleared out a Japanese bunker with a flamethrower only for my entire squad to run into it and burn to death.
I gave up playing CMO/CMANO because I spent 10x as much time making scenarios than I did playing and now just play Fleet Command and Battlefleet Gothic 2.
>>63810200 (OP)I've been playing the Shrine games, they're GZdoom games about a demon killing demons and they were free on Steam. They're mad decent, I find the shotgun from the first game more satisfying than damn near anything in the 2nd game but the 2nd game's weapons are all pretty unique which is definitely worth something. Also, if I've said it once then I've said it a million times, RE Revelations 2's raid mode is fantastic and can often be had for free since the first episode of the game can often be found for free.

>>63814314>The obvious answer would have been Korea, instead of some fantasy scenario. Interesting, unused scenario, early cold war hardware, but also ww2 atmosphere and equipment. It would have been perfect.Agreed, the Stalingrad setting works in og RO2 because it's also a transition point from early war equipment to late war kits (MG42, PPSH42, improved scopes, experimental STG) that you have to work towards and don't feel too out of place or frequent enough to be spammy.
>>63814355Same with Heroes of the West Ro2 mod. Everyone played it for like 3 months and now it's utterly dead
>>63817803You gotta play at peak hours, the EU server usually has better teamwork than the US ones esp Bridge Jumpers and their autistic server admins. >>63818784Have you played that retarded new delta force game?

>>63828001have you ever tried getting into mods?
stuff like "tale of two wastelands", "NVB" and overseer's mods are godlike, even though their first ones are somewhat ameteurish.
there are dozens of really good lore-friendly quest mods that sometime add DLC sized game spaces and tons of equipment, clothes and guns.
whenever i start an F3 or FNV run i just can't even play it vanilla anymore, mostly because i've seen every quest about twenty times already, quest mod greatly alleviate the problem, especially since new ones come out every few months

>>63811697Only two missions in the game are actually cool like this. The rest are generic slop.
Also it's only in single-player, multiplayer is just as much of a mess as ever.

>>63831494>It is modeled, just doesn't blind the player you lit upYes which is what I meant by it not being a thing
I guess in some tanks they're weak spots though but not all that many, like the IT-1 where the periscope is 10000mm RHAe or some shit
>>63831550The modeling being accurate would be the big deal over it actually doing anything real in gameplay when it comes to helping the Ukies in that Bradley. Knowing where to shoot to poke the big scary MBT's eyes out is a big deal and WT tells you when you hit sight blocks.
>>63831605I guess but I don't remember the position of a single vision block in WT tanks unless they're weak points
>>63831663Back when I still played I tended to remember them as places that were extremely annoying to hit because of the modeling without effect. You'd always get that X-ray graphic of the blocks being fucked up while actually doing fuck all for it.

if your autistic enough to learn the game and can deal with it being turn based and a shitload of numbers, its fun. carried a mp5k with a pistol supressor (30 sound tiles) on it on a sling as my night time sneaky boi gun with the thermals/nvgs. daytime was just a sbr'd m4 with a 100 drum thingy in the gun and 6 coffin mags on my gear carrier thing with like 8 grenade pouchs as dump pouches. you can designate your empty magazines to get dumped into your fannypack/leg dump pouches as well.
like seriously this shit is military grade autism if you want to make it so. figure out how to strap a motorbike to a car as soon as possible. use the car as your mobile base, use the bike as your exploration vehicle. you CAN safely drive through a zombie infested town on a 1 tile wide bike if you know what your doing and plan your route.
