boomers. A2 thinks the tappet style piston system on the SCAR is more reliable. I think. There's probably a bunch of piston gas systems that are overall more reliable than DI ARs but I figured we all knew that and knew proper maintenance made it a non-issue.

The bolt is the piston. Its an old myth because AK fags needed some way to feel superior despite the obvious shortcomings.
Also carbon is basically a lubricant anyway. MAC's BCM rifle went like 8500 rounds before choking simply due to there being so much carbon physically in the way the action.

Why would you ever not clean and lube your rifle though? Besides just a purely academic test of the operating system of the rifle to know what potential/eventual failures it will suffer.

I hear this repeated so often but it makes no actual sense. You will always have downtime where cleaning your rifle, even if its just with the hem of your shirt will be beneficial. There is no situation where you don't clean your rifle

The reality is that AR15s are so painfully boring and reliable that guys need to just let them cake up with carbon and torture them without lube because it will give them some excuse to hate their purchase/buy something new

The difference is the receiver geometry.
416 is still subject to AR geometries roughly so you collect crud in the same places and end up with the same failures.
SCAR just kinda wipes everything back and dumps it.
