The Elephant was original named the Ferdinand after Ferdinand Porsche because it was built on the chasses left over from his company's failed Tiger I bid, the electric motors used strategic materials in high demand with the U-boat service, and Porsche had been enamored by petrol-electric drive trains ever since he invented them in 1898 and he had preemptively built 100 examples of his Tiger I prototype at his company's own expense because he thought his bid was a done deal given the obvious advantages of a hybrid drive train (please ignore its size, complexity, frequent breakdowns, overheating, garbage power-to-weight ratio, and use of one ton of copper per vehicle).
