Been doing a re play of fallout 3 lately. Havenโ€™t touched it in years. I gotta say, there is a TON of content buried in this game. So many places I hadnโ€™t explored before. Other than the story ending and some limited combat features, it gives New Vegas a run for its money.

Can I create a setting that's basically STALKER but in a forested part of America in the early 80s or would that be too faggy and/or similar to Fallout? Early 80s specifically because of the A2 style handguard and more gear variety, otherwise 50s-60s would be dope.

Not really, the setting is just spookier and thatโ€™s it, thereโ€™s way less variety of choice and all of them are black or white, no shades of grey like New Vegas.

3 has always been more adventure driven while NV is narrative driven. With NV relating more to the classic fallouts, I thought it was cool seeing how Bethesda designs their open world RPG vs how Interplay would.

Vegas has a bit more color sure, but the setting of 3 is supposed to be dark and gloomy. So itโ€™s hard to compare colors. But yeah NV has more intricate decision making and consequences. Another reason why 3 needs a good remaster. Iโ€™d take a remaster of 3 before NV any day

It's cool that they offer two different experiences from two different developers. Both are great, they just appeals to different people. The real question is why did 4 fail so hard to capture the magic of 3? It sucks has to explore, it's narrative is forgettable, and base building is so bare bones it makes you wonder by they forced it so hard in the first place.

Yeah it basically goes
>3 for atmosphere and interesting story to experience
>New Vegas for interactive experience and theme
>4 for game mechanics, somewhat fun settlement building, and some flashy graphics
All have their strengths and weaknesses. But the most important thing is each game is responsible for the next. None would exist without the other.

I want to say it has good atmosphere, but itโ€™s just too desert. The interactive story and gun mods/ammo are the strength. But the map really isnโ€™t that great to eclipse, itโ€™s just too flat. 3 had a good variety of rolling hills and sprawling cities. If you polished up 3โ€™s story and added the same gun mods, 3 would stand high above NV. But donโ€™t get me wrong, they both have great replay value.

Appreciate your faith. Yes the famous difference between NV and 3 is the range of cause and effect via story decisions. But it should be seen in a good way, it means games took the good stuff, cut out the bad stuff, and added more good stuff. Doesnโ€™t happen very often anymore.

If they ever do make a new fallout, the best part of 4 was the verticality to the city combat, and the exploration of the city. Not enough games have gun battles like that.
>>63813453
>Why did 4 fail
Emil Pagliarulo is not a good writer, the main story's conflict wasn't compelling, the voiced protag, the change in designs for the weapons and monsters, every hostile NPC faction is just a re-skin raider with nothing interesting about them, and too much base building and not enough pre-existing NPC towns making the region more empty. If there was more to the gunners or the children of atom they could've been good.
>>63813914
NV has a lot of the map that's out of the way, has nothing there worthwhile exploring anyway or has enemies which are too numerous or difficult to fight so you can't go there you aren't as rewarded for trying to explore the map. Part of NVs problem is it being based off of a tabletop game so you're meant to follow the DM's path that he's made for the player to walk through and see all his set pieces, his towns and sidequests, and it harms the replayability because I know the lottery player is there, I know the Vipers are waiting for me, Lanius is hanging around for a month till I finally bother to send him on his way.

Did the same last year with TTW and some JSawyer mod, which solved my main gripes with F3 like water being useless, no ironsights and lack of gun variety. Really enjoyed it, F3 is a very lonely game, much more than the others, very atmospheric and the soundtrack is pretty creepy when you are underground and abandoned buildings. Then again, I am really biased since it was my first RPG and first fallout.

seriously forgot it existed. What I meant, I like Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4. Tried 76 like once, got it for free even, but not for me, no modding is a deal breaker for me, I refuse to use fallout 4s left handed guns. I agree about the map though, would be fun to explore but I am not paying fucking thirteen bucks a month to play offline.

>catching beautiful vistas or moments of peaceful bliss randomly
>shooting motherfuckers indiscriminately in any way your soul desires, explosive barrage, rambo bullethosing, stealthy sneaky breaky
You can replay every given mission a few different ways, along with your player doing much the same on the daily.
Maybe you want to sneak in at night to each objective and quietpew sentries, plant an IED and scurry.
Maybe you want the noon sun to light your way on a guns blazing glory of 900 rounds spent, maybe you want to pick off enemies from afar and set alight explosive barrels/tanks and zip the homos trying to escape the ensuring dry brush inferno.
A number of "quirks/janks" have been fixed by simple binary code mods. Rest is graphics updates and weapon slot mods.
There are several major mods which do much of the same thing, but a different flavours. Little room to customize because of the .mod archives being a pain to edit and require complete compiles with no microadjustment like STALKER, for example, with its simple text and immediate response .cfg files

It is literally a make-your-own-adventure sandbox.

Exodus is rather different. Still a rail like the first two, but in this case literally. It's got far and away more character development and plot than the first two, but admittedly each region seems a little heavy-handed in terms of its 'uniqueness'. OTOH you can argue that in the conditions presented that sort of local cultural development actually makes sense in a post-communications world. It's certainly my favorite, for me the chain of local vignettes tied together by the traveling home of the train is extremely comfy/top. It's a travesty that it will not get the followup it was set up for as, when compared to the other two, and post-apoc games as a whole, it creates a narrative of growth through struggle rather than simply struggle to survive. To see the fledgling community at the end grow up, and the 'final battle' as set up at the end carried out, would be great. Exodus has soul in spite of the AAA pressures levied against it, perhaps my favorite fps of all time - certainly tied with the later modded iterations of STALKER, albeit for different reasons.

worst of the 3
story is shit except for like the first 30 minutes and last hour near the end.
the open world ruined it. cause the ai was retarded if you just hung back and sniped. you never had any moments like the bridge. the ai was just really bad. no pathing or patrols. weapon selection was crap compared to the other games. the whole economy of ammo = money and should i use real bullets or not is gone.
it was so dumbed down.
it was the worst of the trilogy but still worth playing just so you know how it ended.

>The Pitt
Easily my favorite. Great atmosphere, top notch loot(Perforator my beloved), and a great morale dilemma with no easy way out. Itโ€™s refreshing from the rest of 3 being very good guy oriented. It was nice to be in a position where you arenโ€™t shoved into being an angel, you have to get your hands dirty and make a judgement call. And if youโ€™re wondering, Ashur is the correct answer.

Wrong. They have the best chance. Itโ€™s not guaranteed to succeed, and the game makes it very clear either side is not guaranteed. But Ashur has the best resources. He also has the best chance at maintaining a functioning society while itโ€™s being worked on. Once the slaves rebel, most of their fighters and resources are wiped out. Leaving them at the mercy of the Troggs.

Ashur is full of shit and will probably never stop using slaves but there is a tiny chance they may actually come up with a cure, and a tiny chance he might be speaking the truth. Yes. The aliens simultaneously visited at least six different, seemingly random, spots all over the world during their brief 2 day picnic.
No one knows why. All everyone knows is that the aliens seemingly broke the laws of physics there permanently, and left behind a shitload of dangerous and mysterious artifacts.
The trash left behind by the aliens is beyond our understanding despite scientists all over the world working to study them, but there's a market for these artifacts, and some are even used commercially, for example as batteries for electric cars.
Does that mean the artifacts being used as batteries are meant to be used as such? We have no idea. Using these "battery artifacts" as such might be equivalent to tribal savages using a laptop computer as a cutting board, while the actual purpose of the computer is beyond their understanding.

>gucci gear
This is primarily a fanbase invention, canon mercs are certainly described as professionals in terms of skill and conduct, but their gear is total shit. Mercs only spawn at experienced or higher in SoC, there are no rookies, so in terms on equipment their peers all have way better armor (including every loner), including night vision; and mercs are left using the 3rd worst armor in the game right up until expert status where they start getting Sevas and exos; and those are probably private purchases. NODs are specifically described as a unique addition to the upgraded merc suit, so the vast majority of the mercs in the zone are seeing with headlamps. In terms on guns, they benefit from standardization with the LR300 and are the only faction that consistently use optics, but the LR300 is inappropriate for the zone and they're still using the same dogshit black market susats as everyone else. Plus their idea of a sniper is a scoped AK, granted that is probably a stand-in for an SVD that they didn't want players getting as early as the wild territory, but nonetheless it doesn't speak of a faction that spares no expense; nor does it indicate a faction that pays particularly well. I think the modern fan interpretation of the mercenaries is as an elite well-equipped post-GWOT PMC, but how they were really intended is as a more traditional 80/90s executive outcomes or dogs of war mercenary company; where they certainly know what theyre doing but their gear isn't anything special. Listening to their dialog, they all seem more unhinged and bitter than cool and collected.

Yeah but that's still a bunch of spearchuckers vs basic NCR grunts with what looks like semiauto ARs. Maybe if the Legion outnumbered them by a thousand to one or something and had judaic levels of subversion where even the commiefornie president tries to give them what they want because he likes to think he's best buttbuddies with Caesar or something
Ackshually it looks like the spearchucker grunts move faster than I do even with my weapon holstered, but is that enough

Legion recruits are generally better trained and more numerous than NCR soldiers. Have to also remember that the NCR are using conscripts as well as recruits none of which are trained to a high level, generally low morale, and have chronic manpower problems, the NCR elite soldiers are also beaten on numerous occassions. This is without considering the institutional problems of the NCR of corruption, poor leadership, spies, incompetence, under supplied, and Hanlon sending false reports wasting even more resources. The NCR also lost a prison to the prisoners somehow, said prisoners then took over a nearby town and the NCR garrison has to sit across a bridge and watch it, not to mention them losing to ants and having the road closed.

The Legion have their elite spy and subterfuge unit who have by the start of the game taken out quite a lot of NCR positions, infiltrated the NCR, are close to getting energy weapons for the Legion, have the Fiends to act as a nuisance to the NCR, the Khans, and the Omertas. There's no end to the Legion's allies or useful people for them. The people of Freeside are against the NCR as well, the sharecroppers aren't in favour of them too much either, very few outside of the NCR support the NCR and more hate it or simply don't want it around. Some in the NCR aren't in favour of it either but if its being invaded by the Legion they might take up arms against the Legion.

If the player didn't exist, the Legion was on its to winning the Mojave and then would eventually win the war with the NCR.

Welp, now I got to see the legion skirmishing with the NCR at last. 3 spearchuckers trying to ambush a patrol of 4 dudes with ARs. I think one of them didn't even have spears to chuck, just a machete. They couldn't even kill a single commiefornie, man, I needed another one of those service rifles kek
I can probably buy the legion having the advantage locally because of infiltration and sabotage, since I haven't come across most of that other shit. I remember the ants, and I think I helped with that demoooralization. I do remember someone mentioning how the NCR is stretched thin and just can't defend everywhere. But how badly are they undersupplied? All these grunts look like they have ARs and ammo, while the legion doesn't even have enough spears to chuck.
So was Primm part of the NCR before? It sounded like the powder gang took over because they had a total of 1 sheriff and 1 deputy, both locals. Looks like even a smaller town like Goodsprings had more armed townsfolk than those guys. That whole questline looked like it was about a choice between joining the NCR or remaining independent with that new Punisher sheriff.

>3 v 4
The Legion's strength is in numbers, subterfuge, and allies.
>Primm
Primm was independent, most of the Mojave is, the NCR control their bases and even those they don't really control nor the area around them which is why Bitter Springs is attacked, Boulder City has the Khans hiding inside it, and the Fiends are able to roam almost freely up to McCarran. The NCR never properly took over the Mojave because they never sent in enough men, they focused on some military sites, the Dam, and the Strip, everything else is secondary to the War with the Legion so they'll eventually get what they don't have.
>Supplies
A bunch of the ranger stations, McCarran, Bittersprings, Camp Forlorn Hope, and Camp Golf all have NPCs complain about or quests about missing or not enough supplies or lack of medical equipment, also why they need dogtags collected so they can better allocate resources. The NCR can't/won't allocate all the resources it needs to properly take the Mojave which is why it has conscripts and elites mixed together with few actual volunteers.

I don't really like any of the new factions, they all just seem like diluted versions of old ones. Like in 20 years time you're still going to have crusty boomers arguing freedom vs duty, but I doubt you'll have aged zoomers arguing ward vs spark or whatever. On top of that, the legacy factions were done dirty, with duty being completely irrelevant and freedom being not anarchist at all. Also the removal of the Ukrainian military seems distasteful, like it feels weird that they ceded cordon control to the perimeter force and contracted out patrolling to ward. I get its a delicate real world topic, but I think sci-fi should be insulated from that shit. Or alternatively they could have just portrayed the Ward as not incompetent and heavy-handed, and then the change would have been unnecessary.

in-universe (and in theory) legion has the innate advantages that come with being conquerors
>no need to be literate, just train
>no need to labor/housekeep, that's for slaves; even more time to dedicate to training
>might makes might ideology, even more rationale to train
>conquer and assimilate other savage tribes; they already know how to chuck spears (which is already very intuitive) so no need to introduce post-apoc humanoids to tech (bullet or laser), let alone train them how to use them = easier to achieve battle-ready recruits
>the role of conqueror =/= ruler; no need to establish overly complex trade lines, just take what you need. Also don't need to give a shit about inhabitant "happiness" (slaves are slaves, everyone else is a soldier -> preoccupy their minds with the next target/glory)
also their weapons being primitive, makes me imagine that in-lore they have the advantage of being able to make slaves manufacture them. IIRC ncr relies heavily on the gun runners
now gameplay-wise....yeah guns usually have the edge unless speccing specifically for melee

The game implies the steelyard is an incredibly valuable asset, almost on par with Hoover dam. They essentially have operational but are held back by disease and radiation. Once they find a cure, he can attempt to transition to a better society. All theoretical of course, but thatโ€™s the story, and in the context of fallout will probably work.

>would eventually win the war with the NCR
Unlikely. Setting aside Caesar's desire to reform the Legion into a real state after taking Vegas, the main issue with the NCR is that the Mojave conflict is seen as a political boondoggle and giant waste of time and resources. If the Legion wins the conflict suddenly becomes existential to the NCR and a lot of the issues plaguing the NCR stop happening because it's in everyone's best interest to stop fucking around. Plus we know from FO2 that the NCR core territories are highly developed and have a lot of tech in comparison to the Legion. We know the NCR has functional vehicles, we know they have a rail network, and we know the Legion does not which means that the Legion is going to be advancing on the NCR at the speed of foot while the NCR will be reinforcing at the speed of trains.

>Plus we know from FO2 that the NCR core territories are highly developed and have a lot of tech in comparison to the Legion
They did when they were small, but judging by the low quality of their standard equipment and mediocre quality of even their best troops gear (repurposed swat armor); it seems like the high baseline standard from fallout 2 has been spread too thin by expansion.
>We know the NCR has functional vehicles
Yes, but to what extent? A handful of functioning haulers and a single presidential vertibird wont make a difference.
>we know they have a rail network
Had. The Mojave is cut off from the rest of the republic by a bridge collapse at the south of the map, possibly caused by the legion; plus half the stations in their lines are sabotaged/derailed by powder gangers or overrun by deathclaws. The only functioning rails the NCR have at the time of the game is the monorail. Hence why choosing to nuke the Mojave outpost at the end of the dlc is stated to completely isolate the NCR.

One has to start pretending what hear in dialogue and read in notes is what is actually happening as opposed to what you see happen in-game. Scripted Legion skirmishes at Camp Forlorn Hope will always spawn at level with firearms and always get bodied in five seconds, Legion assassins can be kited into random NCR patrols and trade 1-1.

However, if you pay attention to the recent history of the Legion given in dialogue and notes its questionable how they even work. Because according to in-game sources the Legion lost most of its experienced troops, officers, and institutional knowledge at the first Battle of Hoover Dam alongside so many casualties it could no longer carry out offensive operations in the Mojave. So while holding positions in the Mojave it then launches a massive campaign in Colorado to press-gang more tribals into the Legion, a campaign that stretches all the way to Denver and very nearly collapses the Legion due to a lack of supplies. So not only is the Legion seen in Vegas primarily made up of people who have only been a part of it for five years or less, while all of this is happening it is still able control all of its territory which spans New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and Utah despite it being clear that the Legion is not an actual government, has no bureaucracy, and is maintained by an ad-hoc logistic system based on independent traders. The Legion quests shouldn't have been "we're so great we already won before you showed up but if you tag along we'll give you a participation trophy when they go off without a hitch" and more "yes, we're exactly as powerful as everyone fears, can you give us some food? We haven't eaten in three days. And while you're at it, can you get me some NCR uniforms? Lanius is gonna nail my balls to the ground if I can't prove we've been hitting NCR patrols and fuck if I'm gonna charge a machine gun."

Isn't humanity just starting to industrialize during fallout 2/new vegas? By the standards of the rest of the world their equipment quality isn't bad considering everyone else has to either scavenge their weapons or what they can create are just spears and shit. The fact that the NCR has a manufacturing capability at all puts them above other factions in the wasteland.

The NCR does have those advantages but those become weaknesses the rail and logistics hubs would be targeted the same way Searchlight, Ranger Station Charlie, and Nelson were the NCR would have to advance and fight a guerrilla war in its own territory and as it moves forward if it advances into Legion territory. The Brahmin Barons may get onboard with the NCR and stop their bickering but equally as likely to try and make deals with the Legion or stay out of it entirely. New Reno, one of the more developed cities is still ran by criminal enterprises which as the Omertas prove could become friendly/loyal to the Legion until the Legion eventually destroys them all for their drug use and manufacture. The Legion would eventually win because of its willingness to accept casualites, create new allies, subterfuge, guerrilla warfare, and the NCRs diffuse nature and already weak state.

That assumes the Legion has zero issues ever when its spelled out the Legion's Mojave operations heavily require the people they're working with be in the dark about how the Legion functions or too short-sighted to care when everyone in the NCR knows exactly how the Legion operates. There is also the problem that the Legion replenishes itself through captured tribals, which are in short supply in the NCR.

I would take Bethesda's engine over UE5, shit's awful. I turned off frame gen thinking my game looked blurred whenever walking by trees but it turns out this shit is blurry regardless of fake frames being on or not. Everything has this hazy feel to it that makes me want to wipe my screen or my glasses.

Is this "/k/" in the room with us right now? Besides a few schizos, I see very little blind yuro-hatred on this board. It's just a coincidence that most nogunzposters are yuros, so they get called out the most.

>5 round lee Enfield magazine
>40mm size 12 gauge shotgun shells
>meant to be replayable but if you do enough quests the fun of clues/leads is over

Seems like a game you would buy for $10 when the better sequel is released in a few years

It's sad going back to the Nexus mods page and seeing that mod devs have basically went "welp, we fixed what we could but shit's too fucked on a fundamental level."
We're gonna be coming up on a year soon and apparently not a soul has found a fix for the sub 100 meter NPC rendering radius
>Have an entire class of sniper weapons
>Basically all useless because the game is CQB central, even in the open world.
Why do we have to suffer game devs thinking "long range sniping" is like, 130 meters max.

>Why do we have to suffer game devs thinking "long range sniping" is like, 130 meters max.
because it would be a nightmare to make a realistically sized world with 400m sightlines

the technical side has been solved now, but you still need to populate all that empty space with POIs which is not going to be solved by any technology other than cranial implants or having 10x the design staff
and the fundamental issue that close combat is more interesting, long range sniping is an option for people who like it, but the core gameplay of being up close and personal is generally more appealing
