General advice though is to get your mind off 20in supremacy and understand that 14.5 or less is much more handy. Standard /arg/ first AR recommendation is 11.5 sbr. Consider that a short barrel free floated gets you as far as a long barrel not free floated. And certainly works well at more realistic ranges.

Long version:
The Streamlight Pro Tac HLX is adequate IMO.
It has a very balanced beam profile which lights up a room perfectly fine and has enough punch to deal with mild ambient light or weather interference.
It’s also very affordable as far as WMLs go in current year.
The issues it has IMO aren’t major but are at least worth noting.
The body is rather large compared to some other lights like surefire especially when you consider that it runs on CR123s.
The mounting point is also further forward on the Streamlight relative to a surefire.
This could be good or bad depending on what you are trying to do / how you are built.
For me on a shorter handguard like a mk18 the Streamlight becomes a bit crowded.

Keep in mind the stream light is closer to the camera so it looks worse than it is but the stream light will have the body further back relative to a surefire if they’re mounted at the same place.
The streamlight also isn’t compatible with the surefire ecosystem unless you get an adapter which just adds more cost, length, and weight.
If you just want to have a light to have a light it’s fine but there’s better options for not much more money which you’ll probably just end up buying eventually anyway.

The actual mounting screw is on the receiver, the battery compartment is just so long that it makes it look a bit weird and also has a tiny bit of material that contacts the rail while the rest of it floats. Originally I had it even closer to the charging handle but it was too close to the backup sight and I had some difficulty doing the double button press to turn the optic on.

cool, my bad then. If you want you could move the front sight all the way forward and rear sight back further so that the top of the rear sight meets the end of the receiver covering the charging handle. Mostly so you have space for a magnifier in the rear if you want one and button for the light in front.
