>11 June 2025 -Saab, in collaboration with Helsing, today announced the successful completion of the first three flights integrating Helsing’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent ‘Centaur’ into a Gripen E fighter jet. As part of Saab’s ‘Project Beyond’, the flights, where the first flight, was conducted on May 28, mark a significant advance in bringing AI capabilities to military aircraft.
>During the flights, the Gripen E gave control to Centaur which successfully autonomously executed complex manoeuvres in a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat environment and cued the pilot to fire.
>The third flight, conducted June 3, focused specifically on Centaur’s performance, pitting it against a real Gripen D aircraft in a series of dynamic BVR scenarios with real-time data integration utilising sensor data to track the target aircraft.

Why would anyone buy Gripen when Swedes don't have confidence in them?

Sweden doesn't have endless gripens + they probably take a fair time to train on
Also I'm sure Erieye + F-16 works out fine.

US let F-16 go why would they stop Gripen?

Sweden did offer Ukraine the Gripen though, Ukraine said they want it but have their hands full with F-16 and Mirage integration right now. Training and building the maintenance infrastructure for three fighter jets at the same time while also having a zoo of legacy Soviet jets in service is not a simple thing, especially for an Air Force the size of Ukraine
>We agreed with the Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces to continue the dialogue on satisfying the requests of the Ukrainian Air Force, in particular on the provision of Swedish aircraft

The fact that 4 Mirage were accepted instead of Gripen makes me think the offer was never genuine or realistic. Not only that Mirage were provided much later than F-16

/g/ user here, all the good AI models, and especially vision models take too much power to be run on something that can fit in a jet, so they must either be:

1. running a tiny model on mobile hardware (so it's shit)
or
2. Running the AI on a datacenter and then wirelessly transmitting everything, which seems problematic.

There's no need for vision models in BVR, Beyond Visual Range combat.
>1. running a tiny model on mobile hardware (so it's shit)
It's more than enough to work through something like an interception timeline, or decide which specific system (drone wingman, specific weapons, etc.) should be employed in specific situations, or to communicate information to relevant parties automatically.
>2. Running the AI on a datacenter and then wirelessly transmitting everything, which seems problematic.
AWACS are more than large enough to house the required computing power, and are obviously going to be computing centers for modern AI-driven aerial combat.

Why would they use vision instead of something that actually works in the air? Cloud cover, mist and all that trash fuck with vision. A plane piloting AI will use its instruments to orient itself instead.
+ This is a many millions dollar MIC program, the programming behind the systems shouldn't be underestimated.
Hasn't self-flying drones been done before anyway?

>Sweden defense industry has yet to be subjugated by the US MIC but it will be

the most important part of the gripen and any fighter jet (the engine)
is a de-rated Licensed copy of a US jet engine

so gripens get the *off* switch too, by way of yanking the license and support etc.
