What's the point of being a national guard if you're not going to shoot anyone except with paintball guns and tear gas? It's not like the protestors are protected by US citizenship. They are invaders.

I notice that the only lethal they have is a pistol, which refutes the often posted meme that somehow handguns don't matter for the military because they'll always have a long gun.

NG units should have unique (and comfortably fabulous) outfits that represent their state. This would enhance local pride, unit cohesion and make for more interesting photography when the Arizona NG run around in legion outfits to serve their red Caesar.

Would it undermined combat effectiveness? Yes. But not everything in the military has to make sense and it would probably help to stand out a little more in natural disasters.

Waiving the flag of a foreign nation while you attack the civil authority is an insurrection, not a protest. It's arguably a foreign invasion but this probably falls a little short due to the lack of a unified central command. Not by much though. Either way it more than justifies the use of federal troops and lethal force.

national guard units usually end up with a mix of whatever they can get handed down to them or purchased. so they might do a partial purchase order for one set of uniforms, get another set handed down to them from the surplus of active duty, ect. in general they have equipment that is 'good enough' even if will technically be different versions of the same thing, or a version behind. if a unit is about to go cycle a deployment somewhere, that's generally when they'll get a bunch of stuff magically that the unit just couldn't procure ahead of time.

Optics, some humanity, and it is not yet necessary to use lethal force. Besides that, you can’t know who in the crowd is fair game (illegal) and who isn’t. If the crowd were 100% illegal, all of the above would still apply desu, but yes, shooting them would also work, as shooting people generally does work.

Anyways, those guys are strapped with paintball guns. Are paintball guns even /k/-related?

Pepperball guns. Basically Tippmann realized you could fill paintballs with OC, which burst into a cloud of pepper spray on impact. Then they marked a bunch of their paintball guns as LESS LETHAL before selling them for a massive markup to law enforcement. Ironically it works pretty well on the less motivated/weaker rioters, because OC pepper spray can be a real bitch in your eyes and lungs if you're not angry and/or high enough to ignore it.

>It's not like the protestors are protected by US citizenship.
how do you know they are not US citizens?

A 90-year-old priest in Los Angeles, who is originally from Co Longford, has described the protests in the city over anti-immigration raids as very personal, as an Irish immigrant.

Speaking on RTÉ's News At One, Fr Peter O’Reilly, who is originally from Abbeylara, said he attended one of the protests yesterday.

He had received word that his diocese would be forming a group of interfaith ministers near one of the protests, and they would have a prayer vigil on the steps of City Hall.

However, this meeting was subsequently cancelled due to fear of violence, so he said he felt the thing to do was to mingle with the people at the protest.

He said that in wearing his priest's collar, he thought the best thing to do would be to bear witness and say: "We stand with you."

Fr O’Reilly said the mood was very serious, but animated.
He outlined that street barriers had been set up in order to protect large groups of people from rubber bullets, which the police had been firing.

The police, he said, were firing them just as a warning for people not to riot.

Fr O'Reilly said what is happening in Los Angeles is very personal for him as an immigrant himself.

"With the Irish experience of being discriminated against for so many years and knowing the discrimination here in this country against the Irish, I felt there was something personal about that," he said.

He continued: "Out of my own personal experience, where I was in some of these communities and knowing how many of them were marginalised because of the colour of their skin.

"They're hard working, family-oriented people that we needed to stand with and to let them know we were with them and for them".

Two problems, congress is entirely beholden to trump no matter how much republicans lie to your face that they stand up to him. Which they never have. And we know this because in that retardedly name budget bill is section 70302, the "Restriction on Enforcement," which removes a federal judges' ability to hold government officials in contempt for disobeying preliminary injunctions or temporary restraining orders. Basically it means the judiciary would be toothless now and any ruling you don't like that they issue can be ignored.

Plus given trump's long record, Congress could defund all his attempts to deploy troop domestically and he'd still do it. Only he'd stiff every troop and contractor of all their money they're owed for the deployment.

And the Court is not composed of the same people today that it was then. Also worth keeping in mind that the best-known flag burning case, over Texas' statute, had a dissent from Rehnquist where he argued that burning the flag is an incitement to violence and therefor not protected speech. It is, to my mind, not a meritless argument, having watched various fights break out over attempted flag burnings since the days of the Berkley Brawl back in 2015-2016.
