why do they make the rear sight pinhole so small? I don't get how you can see through something like this
at least AR-15 rear sights give you a big hole rear sight so you can actually see where you shoot

A smaller aperture enables a higher depth of field (i.e. your front sight and target can both be in focus, and you can make more precise shots) at the cost of letting less light in.

Have you ever actually used the ironsights on an M1 Garand or M16A1 kind of rifle? They're pretty fucking damn good sights for old military rifles, the M1 particularly for its era. Then when you look at the later rear sight on the M16A2, that's basically like a target ironsight, on a military rifle, it's very accommodating and helpful in general.
If you were complaining about the notch sight on an AK, I could at least kinda get it, but they're not hard to get used to. Maybe the tiny rear aperture on the M1918A2 BAR, that one was actually pretty shitty, but not all ironsights are like those.

a. no one uses the big hole on the AR
b. the big hole is fucking miles bigger on an enfield no 4 (the gun on the left) than on an AR
just get your eye closer
>>63828688
it isn't even that. in theory you get better precision and parallax suppression the smaller the hole is

not only that, but the actual A1 sights, if you didn't have the night sights, are like a 200 yard and 350 yard zero for the unmarked and L marked peeps. and they are offset windage wise to accommodate for the fact that the sight is moving on a screw when you flip it.
The M16A2 rear sight doesn't accommodate you flipping it so the bigger hole will have the wrong windage and a 25/300 meter zero is so much worse than a 50/200 meter zero the marines approved a process of slightly modifying the rear sight so they could get 3 clicks below the 300 setting so they could get a 200 yard zero

>why do they make the rear sight pinhole so small?
If rear aperture is smaller than eye's pupil then iron sights work as red dot. You don't need to line up front post relatively to the rear aperture, somewhere in the middle is ok.
http://dougkerr.net/Pumpkin/articles/Aperture_Sight.pdf
(Funny thing is it was only discovered in 2007).

This why apertures are small, eye's pupil is about 3 mm in diameter in daylight.

I guess the boomers are wrong. I saw a diagram that said the xbox huge enfield sight is 0.2 inches and the smaller target sight is 0.1 inches. some boomers were trying to claim the m1 garand rear sight was 0.1 inches but it's clearly smaller the enfield sight

Americans could not innto advanced iron sight usage which peep sights limit, you cannot shoot fine sight half sight or full sight on a peep sight. Peep sights are better places on the receiver tang to be close to the eye and longer ranges. Americans were stupid and wanted to pretend to be log range shotters but did not understand the sight usage very well because their army was selected from very stupid people in a very stupid place. This the retarded American sights you see. America compensated by arivvinng in years late for wars it helped start and claimed victories based onn the blood of other nations, a bit like all the allies who died in afghanistan that the American pubblic like to mock and insult while attacking Canada and Greenland/Denmark/Ukraine/Germany etc etc.

Indians/Burgers/Pakis under 45 are filth on the face of the earth

I think it's meant for use in good visibility. When lighting is poor you use the "Christmas tree" aperture. All the later manuals I have however only describe the use of the "aperture" (the round peep) and the battle sight; nothing about the other three apertures on the sight. The peep was also customizable to the soldier: the standard aperture was .05" but anywhere from .04" to .10" could be fitted by an armorer. That >>63830647 is the "USMC No.10" sight set with just a .10" aperture and no other funny business. Here it is next to a standard .05" aperture.

I've seen manuals or c&rsonal or something that said the christmas tree was for blindlets and the 2 or 3 extra notches were volley sights or basically volley sights. Like the distance you would use them at is well beyond the range you can see a man without magnification anyway, hence the deletion and the USMC sight you have only having the battle sight and single peep like the no 4 enfields have
